Campaign for Library & Archives Expansion

Oakley Collier architects continue to work diligently with the Village of Pinehurst to design a library fit for the charm and posterity of our beloved village. Stay tuned for updates and timelines, as well as opportunities to support the much-anticipated library and archives expansion!

A Tote-ally Fun Adventure

You've heard of Flat Stanley, but have you ever considered a travelin' tote?

Well, this summer, volunteer Dianne Kinsella decided to bring a little Given Tufts to the rest of the world in a globetrotting series she calls "Travels with the Old Bag."

She and her bookshop tote got to hop the pond for a little British sightseeing, stopping at iconic places like Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, Ely Cathedral (637 AD) in Cambridgeshire, the Agatha Christie Memorial in London's West End, the world's first book town, Hay on Wye, and the real Hundred Acre Wood of Winnie-the-Pooh fame.

To follow Dianne's adventures and see where she - and the old bag - have been, check out the hashtag #TravelsWithTheOldBag on social media.

Meet the New

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Cara Mathis

Executive Director

Please join us in welcoming the newest member of the Given Tufts Foundation family, Executive Director Cara Mathis. Cara officially started her position this summer, but she's no stranger to the foundation, library, or archives. You might recognize her from the Pinehurst en Plein Air art courses she teaches at the Tufts Archives, or from her daily perusals of the Given Tufts Bookshop shelves.

In her spare time, she's active on the Historic Preservation Commission and the Sacred Heart church choir, and she currently chairs the Beautification Committee, as well. Not surprisingly, when she was asked to design the Village's Christmas ornament in 2022, she immediately chose Given Memorial Library as her subject, with the title, "A Christmas for the Books."

In fact, her dedication to the library, archives, and bookshop are what inspired her to jump into the Given Tufts fold, and she's excited to bring her passion for the foundation's legacy to the role.

Welcome aboard, Cara!

A Game that Endures

Golf tournaments at Pinehurst look a little different today than they did in the early 20th century, huh? Although, at the same time, not much has changed. The energy, the fanfare, the camaraderie from spectators -- all the same as in the days of Ross and rough. The scale and production might be wilder nowadays (and the outfits a little cooler, too), but what has never faded is the passion for play and the love of the game. The 2024 U.S. Open upheld the legacy of golf at Pinehurst in a way many never expected, and the bookshop, library, and archives are proud to have played a small part in making its visitors feel welcome on hallowed ground.

Did you get to experience this year's U.S. Open in person?
