Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has a new, young and very active male Amur tiger. Chewbacca is one-and-a-half years old, and he arrived from Columbus Zoo and Aquarium this October. Chewbacca's move to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). His move will provide Columbus Zoo and Aquarium the space they need to breed the most genetically valuable pair of Amur tigers in human care, thus helping the AZA sustain the genetics of this critically endangered species.

Recently, two of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's staff members, Joanna Husby and DeeAnn Wilfong, traveled to Ecuador to work with a field conservation team to track and radio collar wild mountain tapir, the most endangered of the four species of tapir. The goal of this ongoing project is to study 10 mountain tapir, so scientists can learn more about their conservation needs before it is too late. This vital research project was funded by Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's members through their conservation donation vote in April - our Zoo members voted to contribute $22,000 to fully fund the project.
