This year's AAHN Eleanor Krohn Herrmann keynote speaker is Dr. Karen Flynn. Dr. Flynn  is an Associate professor in the Department of Gender and Women's Studies and the Department of African-American Studies Program at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She received her Ph.D. in Women's Studies from York University, Toronto, Ontario, in 2003. Her research interests include migration and travel, Black Canada, health, popular culture, feminist, Diasporic and post-colonial studies. Dr. Flynn's recent book: Moving Beyond Borders: Black Canadian and Caribbean women in the African Canadian Diaspora is by the University of Toronto Press. Moving Beyond Borders won the Lavinia L. Dock Award from the American Association of the History of Nursing.  She is currently working on a second book project that maps the travel itineraries of Blacks across borders. 

In addition to her scholarly publications, Dr. Flynn has published numerous editorials in Share, Canada's largest ethnic newspaper, which serves the Black & Caribbean communities in the Greater Metropolitan Toronto area. She was also a free-lance writer for Canada Extra, and most recently for Swaymag.ca where she wrote passionately about contemporary issues considering issues of race, gender, class, sexuality, age, and nation. Dr. Flynn was recently a Dean's Fellow for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS), a program geared towards strengthening and expanding the cadre of leaders in the College. In 2015, Dr. Flynn was selected as the Conrad Humanities Fellow for LAS for excellence in scholarship.

AAHN is pleased to bring Dr. Margaret P. Moss to present this year's Closing Plenary address. Dr. Moss, an enrolled member of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation [Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota] is Assistant Dean of Diversity and Inclusion/Associate Professor at the University at Buffalo, School of Nursing. She is the first and only American Indian to hold both nursing and juris doctorates. As a RWJF Health Policy Fellow she staffed the US Senate Special Committee on Aging (2008-9) and was lead staff on the now enacted National Alzheimer's Project Act. Dr. Moss recently published the first nursing textbook on American Indian health (Springer 2015). She was a 2014 Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Aboriginal/Indigenous Life and Culture in the North American Context at McGill University, Montreal, QC (2014) where she analyzed Canadian Census and Health laws and the resulting deficits for indigenous health outcomes. Dr. Moss was on faculty at Yale University (2010-2015) where she directed both the Masters and Doctoral programs on leadership and Policy. 

Dr. Moss' clinical experience, included being staff nurse and then House Supervisor and Patient Education Specialist at the US Public Health Service, Indian Health Service/ Santa Fe Indian Hospital (1991- 1996). Her research methods have included ethnography, geographical information systems, survey, and other qualitative methods. Dr. Moss has published papers primarily focused on American Indian Elders, Zuni Elders & Aging, Migration & Re-Migration of Am Indians and the Impact on Elders.

announce that this year's conference will take place at the Woodcliff Hotel & Spa. They are currently taking reservations, which can be arranged on their website or by calling 585-381-4000.

AAHN has negotiated the rate of $179 per night. These rates will apply three days prior and three days after the conference.

The reservation deadline to receive the negotiated rate is Wednesday, August 16, 2017. After the cut-off date, the hotel reserves the right to charge at their prevailing rates.

Each year, AAHN collects items of interest related to nursing and health care history to be auctioned off at our silent and live auctions. The money raised through these auctions supports AAHN grant program, giving financial support to researchers focusing on nursing and health care history.
