HOW IS YOUR CHILD PERFORMING ACADEMICALLY?
READING IS ESSENTIAL: IT IS A NECESSITY
Jasper County School District realizes that reading is essential. In fact, it is a necessity!
Reading and its importance is pivotal to the success of any individual. Reading is more than fundamental. Literacy skills are recognized as one of the strongest predictors of academic success.
If we desire to change the historical academic performance of JCSD, we must agree to focus on the following:
1.) A focus on Academics and not just Athletics,
2.) Ensuring your child is reading daily and performing at or above grade level,
3.) Ensuring your child attends school regularly.
Reading proficiently by the third grade is considered a “make-or-break benchmark in a child’s educational development,” according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Children are learning to read from the time they are born up until the time they complete third grade. Beginning with the fourth grade, children are reading to learn.
When children don’t learn to read by the end of the third grade, research shows their potential to earn a good living is decreased. All learning becomes substantially more difficult for children who are struggling with basic reading skills.
In the coming days and weeks, your child’s school will be contacting you and inviting you to come in and learn about where your child is performing academically. You will learn at what grade level your child’s performance equates, what your child must to do improve academically, and what your child must do to be promoted at the end of the school year.
For any parent who does not respond to the school’s invitation to meet, a home visit will be conducted.
Based on the academic performance of our students in JCSD, as measured by the summative state assessments, we can no longer ignore underperformance.
Look for the invite to learn about your child’s academic performance and the support your child will need from you to ensure he or she is excelling academically.
