Hocus Pocus

"Ghouls Night Out"

by Virginia Coyle

"My inspiration comes from my love of vintage Halloween post cards by John Winsch, Ellen Clapsaddle,Tuck and Sons, to name a few. I also am inspired by vintage Halloween collectibles, beautiful old houses and castles. A fascination of the history surrounding how Halloween evolved from its pagan origins to how we celebrate it today further fuels my creative juices."

Haunted House

By Brenda Sylvia

"I have always been a huge fan of Halloween. I follow some people on Youtube who make their own props. Lately a trend has been up-cycling dollhouses into haunted houses. Back in July, I went to a wonderful exhibition at the Chrysler Museum called Strange Plants. The artist, Heather Beardsley, has worked for years with the ideas of plants growing over places and things. Her work includes all kinds of media but in one piece she covered her childhood dollhouse with white sculpted plants growing inside and up the stairs. A few days later I came across a beat up wooden doll house at a thrift store. I couldn’t resist buying it for my own Halloween project. While I was brainstorming for a theme for my house, I posted a photo of it on facebook. Jennifer, the exhibition manager of the Bay School Community Arts Center immediately replied and said they wanted it. I asked for what and she told me about their Hocus Pocus Show. I decided right then I wanted to do a magic-themed haunted house. Luckily for me the dollhouse came with plastic bags of furniture inside. I ended up either altering or making everything I used in my Hocus Pocus house. I worked on it for about three months while still painting and doing some traveling. It easily has well over a hundred hours of work in it. This project stimulated my creative juices and was truly a labor of love."

October Artist of the Month

Georgia Sprague

"My inspiration for this painting comes from my two lording roosters who occupy our backyard. One rooster, the darker and more territorial Mochi, has established dominion over our two (also male) Peking ducks. The smaller and sweeter rooster, Puffy, has established dominion over the humans, and they have been at odds over their respective social circles since they hit puberty. Thus the nickname, “Backyard Bad Boys” was born, and has even formed into a singsong chant and an inside joke between my family members and myself. Thankfully at their hearts, both roosters have proven themselves to be good birds and even better alarm clocks."
