Meet the Makala/Bembi Family
Fidele Mikala and Astride Bembi remember the exact date they arrived in Bloomington-Normal with their three teenagers: October 5, 2015 after a very long journey from Congo.

They found jobs and an apartment to rent, but dreamed of owning their own home. They are a 2021 Partner Family with Habitat McLean County. We'll break ground on their new house this spring!
Firefighters Present Award
Business manager Carol Kuester accepts a plaque from Charles Casagrande, a Bloomington Fire Investigator. It reads, The Bloomington Fire Department thanks you for your resources and assistance in the training and continuing education of our members.

When the City of Bloomington takes ownership of a property that has been abandoned or forfeited, they often donate it to us. The existing structure gets torn down, making way for a Habitat partner family to build their new home. Before the structures are torn down, the Bloomington Fire Department uses them for training. No, they don't set fire to them! But, they do fill them with non-toxic smoke (generated from cooking oil) and practice no-damage firefighting and rescues.

It's another level of partnership between Habitat McLean County and our community and we are happy to be part of it.
