Nearly 20 years ago, when our founder, Charlotte Ellertson, decided to create a dynamic organization that would bridge academic research and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) policy and service delivery, she chose—after much consideration and consultation—the ibis to embody that vision. An ancient bird with a special role in many cultures around the world, the ibis, like the stork, represents fertility. It is also a symbol of forbidden women’s health knowledge, depicted in Egyptian mythology as Thoth: a lunar deity responsible for writing, logic, and calculation—the elements of research.
In its animal way, the ibis is a brilliant researcher. Its long, curved bill—reminiscent of clyster syringes used by midwifes of the past—contains cells that detect underground vibrations when probing the earth for food. The hadada, a variety of ibis native to sub-Saharan Africa (and common, if not always loved, in South Africa, where we have an office), are able to sense movement* up to 20 centimeters (eight inches) below the earth’s surface. This “remote touch” goes hand-in-hand with enlarged regions of the brain that process the flood of information pouring in through the beak.

Like an ibis hyper-aware of its environment, we at ‘capital I’ Ibis are finely attuned to SRHR needs, policy opportunities, and the potential for exciting partnerships with extraordinary organizations working across sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice. We listen for and respond to the experiences and needs of communities we work with, conducting groundbreaking and innovative research that explores timely, relevant topics others cannot or will not address. We probe the social, political, and geographical landscapes in pursuit of knowledge, bold ideas, and innovation. And like the ibis—with its wide wingspan and mighty speed—we seek new heights of freedom: the freedom to soar toward a future where everyone has access to the SRHR information and care they want and need—where every person is free and able to make the best choices for themselves, their families, and their communities.
