Councilmember Bry seconds motion and Councilmember Alvarez and Council President Cole vote in support
Meeting This Week & Club Member Highlight
Democrats for Equality,
Yesterday (Tuesday), was a mixed bag.

On the one hand, close to 100 people gathered together at the San Diego LGBT Center to celebrate the historic signing of SB 179 with our very own State Senator Toni Atkins and Assemblymember Todd Gloria.

SB 179, the Gender Recognition Act, makes California the first state in the nation to allow residents to choose a third, non-binary gender marker on state-issued documents to best reflect their gender identity.
This is a big deal.

This is a critical, game-changing piece of legislation that continue to put our state at the forefront of progress on LGBTQ issues, while so many of our brothers and sisters fight every day in other parts of our country to have their voice be heard.

BIG THANK YOU again to our State Senator Toni Atkins, our Assemblymember Todd Gloria, State Senator Scott Weiner in San Francisco, and of course, Gov. Jerry Brown for signing this important, historic bill.

Meanwhile... at the same time our Democratic elected leaders at the state level are taking the time to stand up and give a voice to our community, the same can not be said about some of our elected leaders at City Hall.

Council President Cole, Councilmember Bry, and Councilmember Alvarez... I am looking at you, and I am beyond disappointed. Beyond frustrated.

Councilmember Bry -- heartbreaking enough -- seconded the motion by Trump-Loving, Right-Wing Scott Sherman to approve the Morris Cerullo Legacy Project.

Your collective vote to approve this in Mission Valley -- which amounts to a ringing endorsement of building an 18-acre anti-gay theme park in the heart of our city -- is an absolute betrayal to the LGBTQ community.

As a result of this regretful turn of events,  the Executive Board of San Diego Democrats for Equality have unanimously withdrawn the friendly incumbent endorsement consideration towards Council President Cole in San Diego City Council District 4. At this point, the Board strongly encourages a challenge to her re-election effort.

A series of other measures will be considered by the Executive Board, and will be discussed at the club meeting on Thursday, and our Club President will be introducing a public statement condemning this vote for the Club's consideration.

Thankfully, the Executive Board is extremely proud of Councilmembers Chris Ward and Georgette Gomez for standing for -- and with -- our community. They are #fam and we love them.

A reminder that our monthly meeting is  THURSDAY, October 19 at Joyce Beers Community Center in Hillcrest. Social time at 6:30pm, Meeting starts at 7:00pm.

The agenda for this meeting shall be as follows:

  • 7pm Call to Order
  • Member Announcements
  • President's Report
  • Morris Cerullo Legacy Center Vote
  • Club CDP Pre-Endorsement Delegates
  • Endorsement Considerations:

  • State Controller (Friendly Incumbent)
  • Congressional District 53 (Friendly Incumbent)
  • Assembly District 80 (Friendly Incumbent)

In Solidarity.
Your Club VP for Resource Development

The Club depends on membership dues to keep the lights on and promote our candidates and issues to the community. A large number of community members depend on our  Voters Guide  to help them make an intelligent choice when marking their ballots so your membership renewal is critical to ensure those Guides get into those hands. At the risk of sounding like a Public Television pledge drive, if you depend on our endorsements, Voters Guide, newsletters, social media posts and programs,  you should be a member!
If your membership has lapsed or if you want to renew your membership, please re-up now. You might also consider upgrading your membership to a higher level.
