Wildcat dumping in JP

Neighbors finding couches, etc. in the alley - report it!

Feel free to email notifications of illegal dumping in Jefferson Park directly to ward3@tucsonaz.gov . Ward 3 informs us they can get illegally dumped items cleaned up pretty promptly. It's best to include the nearest address and a brief description of what's been dumped. Photos are great as well.

138kV Overhead Lines thru JP--Maybe not!

READ THIS from the Undergrounding Steering Committee:

The defeat this past May of Proposition 412, the franchise fee, resulted in the loss of the dedicated source of funding for the proposed undergrounded portion of TEP’s Kino to DeMoss-Petrie Project. Given the very difficult political context (including TEP’s request for a concurrent 12% rate increase and the rush to get the franchise contract onto the ballot, thwarting public input beforehand), the proposition faced many unrelated yet strong headwinds from the start.

The issue remains as important as ever to prevent a series of 85-to-110-foot high industrial-sized pylons carrying overhead transmission lines, stretching for miles straight through the center of town. This project must be constructed underground. Any over heading of the project should occur only in clearly appropriate areas, such as in zones that are already dominantly or entirely industrial ones.

TEP recently withdrew its application to the Line Siting Committee of the Arizona Corporation Commission. The reason that TEP cited for the withdrawal is that they are no longer considering their initial route, the Kino/Campbell corridor. A lot of TEP’s change of mind here was due to the action of the Neighborhood Undergrounding Coalition. While TEP’s withdrawal is very good news in one respect, it also has the potential to pose a host of new problems. If the lines are not to be undergrounded down the Kino/Campbell route, where will TEP propose that they be placed? Will TEP now try to route them above ground along other major thoroughfares, as well as through a series of neighborhoods, across the middle of the city?

TEP is presently working internally to decide its own course of action. Little yet has occurred in public. TEP will very soon unveil a public process to discuss where the new route for the project should be placed. The route must go through the middle of the city. We believe that TEP is still going to propose that the entire project along any new route be constructed above ground, including its endless string of 85-to-110-foot-high towers. When the time comes, we must be ready to take concerted action to stop this calamitous blight from occurring across the heart of the city. Preserving the Old Pueblo ambience is essential to our quality of life, vital to building tourism, and necessary to maintaining the health of the city’s whole economy. We will continue to update you as we learn more and provide information about ways that you can become involved.

Lend A Hand, Senior Services, looking for a co-ordinator

Neighbors -- Lend A Hand Senior Services (LAH), a non-profit that our neighborhood belongs to, is looking for a new coordinator. The position is about 25 hours a week and pays a stipend of $1,500 a month. The person who will fill this position is not doing so to get rich, but will reap the rewards of meeting wonderful people and knowing that they are doing something to benefit others. The job helps our senior and other clients obtain the services that they need. The current coordinator is stepping down at the end of 2023, but a new person will be hired as soon as LAH finds the right fit.

Jefferson Park neighbor,Trish Gehlen, volunteered with LAH and was the coordinator for three years. If you have interest in this position please contact Vicki Mills (vamills@arizona.edu (520) 248-8621). If you know someone who might be interested, please pass the announcement on to them.  If you have questions about the job, please feel free to contact Trish: pygehlen@cox.net

Donations to Casa Alitas Refugees

.... needed now more than ever

Per Steve Kozachik's newsletter: "I’m in touch with some of our shelter operators and the description I get of the number of guests being delivered by CBP is that they’re already ‘very slammed.’ The numbers will escalate once the government ends the COVID-based restrictions on entry that Title 42 was to address. So, we will need your donations even more than we have during what has been a relative (very relative) lull in the number of arrivals. We’ve been seeing 300-500 people daily".

SEEKING DONATIONS OF PERSONAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS AND UNDERCLOTHING (SOCKS, UNDERWEAR, BRAS) ESPECIALLY IN SIZES SMALL AND MEDIUM

DROP OFF AT WARD VI OFFICE - 3202 E First St - between 9 and 1.

The folks running the Alitas Welcome Center come by the Ward VI weekly to gather the donations you bring into the office. The weekly trips are necessary because they continue to get 300-500 new arrivals daily at Alitas.

We can’t get families who helped in our own war effort united, and we leave it up to donors to help with people coming across our border escaping trauma in their home countries. At the Ward 6 office we continue to be grateful to all of you who see the needs and support the people we’re serving. (from Ward VI newsletter)
