Views Change - We can make a difference!

2019 the trail construction begins

Does advocacy and hard work pay off?

Beginning in 2015 Jefferson Park collaborated with the Transportation department, three different Project Managers, Ward III, Mayor and Council, and RTA to maintain NR-1 zoning and to create a Linear Park on the remnants from Hampton to Santa Rita. The residences along Grant needed mitigation!

The big machines began to create the trail in 2019 with Parks and Recreation as the contractor and with monies from the park bonds. It was messy, dusty, and took 26 plus contributing properties.

In March 2022, 26 more trees were planted by neighborhood volunteers and Trees for Tucson.even years later, the neighbors are seeing the results of their efforts. The Grant Road Coalition will be advocating for a continuation of the Linear Trail in the last two blocks of our neighborhood--one on each side of Mountain.

SAMOS, our "across the street" neighborhood is seeking a continuation of the trail on their side. It may be another 4-7 years. For the welfare of our neighborhoods and central Tucson, we are in it for the long haul!

Today - photo looking toward Grant Road, from the back wall of homes adjacent to the trail.

Traffic Calming in Jefferson Park - Updates

MOUNTAIN AVENUE- When the traffic engineers returned the suggested traffic calming for Mountain--they recommended 5 speed tables for Mountain from Grant to Speedway. Jefferson Park has since contacted the U of A to request that they partner in the fundraising for the table between their facilities from Speedway to Mabel. Initially, they have said no, but your traffic committee is following up.

SITES WITHIN THE NEIGHBORHOOD- Three sites: 1) Santa Rita between Edison and Grant; 2) Santa Rita at Seneca; 3) Seneca near Tyndall. Humps or chicanes still under discussion.

PERIMETER OF OUR IST SCHOOL- Based on a combination of more neighborhood traffic and an increase in school population, the student safety is an issue. IST has had 3 speed humps recommended.

Take a Walk - Visit the Polo Pony Park

Take a walk over to the Banner Parklet at Lester and Warren. This lovely parklet was made possible by a partnership between Jefferson Park and the Banner Team led by Stephen Brigham.

Polo was brought in to the Arizona territory by the US Cavalry units. Until the start of World War II, it was part of the U of A Cavalry ROTC program. The main polo fields were located next to Chauncey Lane.

Etched concrete pavers honor folks who have been important to Jefferson Park. The latest addition is a tribute to Suzanne Trappman, a long time resident and advocate.

Banner Parklet 2019

Banner Parklet today - lots of shade

What a difference 3 years makes! The vegetation adds shade to create an oasis. The ramada (roof design by students), benches (designs by IST students and Blenman School), polo pony statue, and etchings are a fine remembrance of the history of this neighborhood and site. Suzanne would approve.

Extreme Heat Emergency- Are you Prepared?

This from Sustainable Tucson, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and BaRN (Building a Resilient Neighborhood, a working group of neighborhood associations).
We are observing National Preparedness Month with weekly messages to inform and inspire the community. This week's message comes from Ready.gov, with a few tips on extended power outage. Take a few minutes to acquaint yourself with the points -- see what steps you have already taken and what else you can do. Then, please take our survey on heat preparedness below. Here's a brief video (4:32), "Preparing Makes Sense" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JveDH05oXk.

Do you know what to do in an extreme heat emergency? Read this from FEMA

End-of-Life Decisions - a film

End-of-life decisions and options. The Arizona End of Life group is hosting the event at 2pm on Sunday, October 2nd. It’s free, but they hope many of the people coming share a $5 donation to help defray costs.

End of life decisions are critical to have in place before you need them. Nobody can anticipate serious injuries due to say a car crash or a sudden fall. In some cases, though degenerative illnesses give people time to plan. This event will share the story of one guy who had that luxury – and acted on it.

Come and hear “Jack has a Plan.” It’s another in the series of community relevant events the Loft team is proud to host. Here’s a short trailer on the film: https://jackdocumentary.com/
