Former GED student studying respiratory therapy

“Literacy Network has helped me to get a GED, something I didn’t think I could get,” says Melisa in this powerful video. Melisa, a single mother of three, initially dropped out of high school to care for her son and had attempted to earn her GED nearly a dozen times before finding success working regularly with a tutor at Literacy Network. See a 2018 video of Melisa learning the results of her GED test here.

Melisa applied for college immediately after leaving Literacy Network and is excited about her future as a respiratory therapist. “Respiratory therapists are amazing people that’s added to the healthcare field,” says Melisa. “I can see myself in this career.” Melisa also identifies the important role respiratory therapists have played during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Respiratory therapists are front and center with COVID,” she explains.

Melisa is on track to graduate in May of 2023. “Go follow your dreams,” says Melisa, “and don’t let not having a GED stop you.”

Ongoing COVID education helps inform learner decisions

COVID 19 vaccine campaign update

With COVID-19 guidelines and recommendations changing frequently, Literacy Network is committed to providing accurate, easy-to-understand information to students so that they can make decisions that are best for their families.

All students across programming recently completed our fifth custom-developed COVID mini-lesson, delivered by trusted teachers and tutors. The lesson broke down confusing and critical information about boosters, including eligibility and how to get one. The lesson also gave students information about the recent CDC update that children ages 5-11 can now be vaccinated with the Pfizer Pediatric vaccine. Information about JustDane’s vaccine clinic on June 21 was also included.

During the lesson, Maria shared her recent experience with getting a second booster and encouraged her classmates to get boosted as well. She also learned that her granddaughter was newly eligible for the vaccine and was excited to tell her daughter to schedule an appointment for her!

Literacy Network's COVID-19 mini-lessons are made possible by a generous grant from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

Support student services to meet record-breaking demand!

Student Services staff answering a phone call

In summer 2022, more than 250 community members expressed interest in Literacy Network’s classes and tutoring programs—the highest-ever number of adults to reach out during registration! To meet the demand for our programs, we urgently need to raise $85,000 before the fall semester to expand our Student Services department. Your donation will make this possible.
