Trump Administration Imposes Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China

The White House has released a Fact Sheet on tariffs. Tariffs will be imposed pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. They will be:

  • Energy resources from Canada: 10%
  • All other imports from Canada: 25%
  • All imports from Mexico: 25%
  • All imports from China: 10%

According to the Fact Sheet, these tariffs will remain in place until “the extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs, including deadly fentanyl,” is alleviated.

NPGA’s initial opinion is that “energy resources” includes propane/LPG imports into the U.S. from Canada, and accordingly, they will have a 10% tariff rather than 25%.

NPGA has not yet seen an executive order implementing the tariffs, which will supply additional details.

NPGA has been preparing for potential new tariffs. On January 7, the NPGA Executive Committee approved a strategic plan related to potential tariffs and weeks ago, NPGA engaged sophisticated trade counsel to represent the industry. NPGA also gathered feedback from the industry via two surveys, aligned with like-minded trades (including the Canadian Propane Association), gathered economic data, and is in the process of gathering relevant logistics information. NPGA and its counsel will review potential next steps and will also closely monitor retaliatory tariffs or other potential action taken by the impacted countries.

Tariffs will be a primary topic of conversation at NPGA Winter’s Board meeting in Clearwater, Florida this coming week. Please know this is a top priority for NPGA.
