Early Bird Membership Discount Available for
One More Month
CanSIA is readying for a busy June with the launch of a new Ontario Market Renewal Forum, ongoing engagement activities with our members on community solar in Alberta, and our annual Summer Solstice event in Toronto on June 21st.

That said, as we approach a new membership year beginning July 1st, we can't help but look a bit further ahead to what we want to accomplish in the next year.

Here are some important causes that will be getting a great deal of our attention in the coming year:
  • Helping to ensure rooftop and community solar programs in Alberta are comprehensive yet flexible in their delivery and streamlined and predictable in their administration.
  • Ensuring solar is economical within Ontario's Climate Change Action Plan.
  • Working with the federal government to make the renewables market in Canada more attractive to investors.
  • Educating the public on the benefits of solar energy to communities, local economies and the environment.
  • Breaking negative myths about the cost and reliability of solar energy.
Throughout the year we will continue to keep our members informed and engaged so they can take advantage of and plan for new opportunities in the industry.

New members can learn more about joining CanSIA on our website here.

Don't forget! Your company can join or renew membership now at 10% off the annual fee, but this early bird discount is only available until June 30th.

Policy Engagement and Influence
CanSIA Launches 'Ontario Market Renewal Forum'NewForum
The Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and other stakeholders have identified the need to evolve Ontario's electricity market to address known market inefficiencies and to develop a more dynamic marketplace in the future. Through the Market Renewal Program (MRP), a significant set of initiatives will amount to a fundamental redesign of Ontario electricity markets and prepare the province for future structural and technology changes.

CanSIA has recently launched the Ontario Market Renewal Forum to undertake the following:
  • Monitor the IESO Market Renewal Program (MRP);
  • Inform members of the impacts and opportunities for solar technologies within the MRP; and,
  • If applicable, advocate solar industry positions related to the MRP design.
CanSIA Members can sign-up for the 'Ontario Market Renewal Forum' here.

CanSIA's 2017-18 Strategic Projects UnveiledStrategicProject
Each membership year, CanSIA's Strategic Projects tackle market and policy barriers across the country, allowing the Association to position the solar energy industry for market growth and success in the near and distant future. CanSIA launched the following 2017-18 Strategic Projects:

Federal Solar Electricity Strategy
Project Aim: To convert the Federal Government's climate change and clean growth commitments into growth in solar electricity's national market share.

Alberta Solar Market Development
Project Aim: To capitalize on the momentum built from Alberta's Climate Leadership Plan and to secure the necessary policy, regulatory, procurement, and programs to accelerate small, medium and large solar market segments.

Building Public Support for Solar
Project Aim: To garner public support for solar energy-educating and informing the public on its advantages and shifting the perception of solar from a technology of the future to an indispensable energy solution of the present.

Alberta Community Solar Forum to work on recommendations for submission by June 22ndABCommunity
CanSIA initiated the Alberta Community-Scale Solar Electricity Forum this past March to help identify what the industry perceives to be the key defining factors of community-scale solar in Alberta and what kind of contractual mechanisms, key enablers and best practices would be suitable for the Province's consideration.

Based on information collected through the forum to date and following an initial submission by CanSIA to the Alberta Utilities Commission as part of their distributed generation review, this forum will now prepare a set of recommendations for Alberta Energy. A webinar will be held on June 13th to discuss the draft submission.

Members who have not yet joined the forum but would like to participate in the webinar should sign up for the forum by visiting the Members-Only Forum Page.

Highlights from Solar West 2017SWest
On May 9, we kick started out 8th Annual installment of Solar West, CanSIA's annual regional conference for the solar energy industry in Western Canada. The sold out event confirmed growing momentum for Canada's solar energy industry.

Solar West 2017 featured three days of networking opportunities, presentations and panel discussions on a variety of topics, including the following highlights:
  • Research was presented that demonstrates an annual market share of 6% of Alberta's electricity supply from solar energy in 2030 would be reasonable.
  • The next year will see 510 MW of utility scale renewable facilities contracted in Alberta and Saskatchewan with more than 20% of that guaranteed for solar energy.
  • Incentive programs for residential, commercial, municipal and indigenous community deployment continue to drive significant demand for solar electricity in Alberta.
CanSIA Members can access Solar West 2017 presentations in one convenient list through the Members-Only Portal.
