Opening Note from CanSIA Vice President,
Wesley Johnston
There's still time to tell us about barriers to reducing soft costs for Ontario projects.

To say that solar companies in Ontario are adaptive would be an understatement. The industry has hit some high highs and low lows over the past several years and recent blows include a move to repeal the Green Energy Act and the revoking of the amended net metering regulations. But solar, particularly combined with other technologies, continues to offer a solution to a number of challenges facing the Ontario electricity sector and its consumers. It's our job to reinforce solar energy as a mainstay in Ontario with a steady and measured approach.

CanSIA's Advancing Solar Technology Regulations in Ontario (ASTRO) project is an important effort in this regard and has recently launched a Soft Costs Survey. The findings of this study will serve as the basis of CanSIA's strategy to work with the new Ontario government and energy agencies to help achieve efficiencies and reduce red tape within the solar electricity sector. Click here to take part in the study by October 3rd, 2018.

CanSIA encourages all Ontario solar market participants to take part in this survey. Your participation will help to ensure that these findings are representative of the current situation in Ontario.

One of the key objectives for this new government is to cut red tape and drive efficiencies within government and regulated markets to make goods and services more affordable for everyday Ontarians. We in the Ontario solar industry share a drive to abolish inefficiencies within the solar electricity market caused by regulatory, technical and market barriers. CanSIA is committed to working with this new government to break down barriers to consumer uptake of reliable, affordable, and accessible solar energy.

To ensure we are taking the right steps, CanSIA has hired Crestview Strategy to develop and implement our government relations strategy. CanSIA is also reactivating the Building Public Support for Solar (BPSS) project to launch a grassroots-based communications campaign to build support among the broader public. We hope all members will participate as we offer opportunities to get involved.

In closing, although the political winds have changed in Ontario the sun still shines brightly, and CanSIA continues to proactively find new ways to reposition and advocate for favourable solar energy treatment in this new environment. We rely on the contributions of our members to advocate on behalf of the industry and encourage all stakeholders to support these efforts by maintaining a membership in good standing. Consult our directory to find out if your company is a member in good standing.
