October 2024

10 things all Illinois local Leagues should do NOW to prepare for the November Election:

  1. Go in person to observe your local voting equipment testing. Take pictures and post them on your local League social media.
  2. Serve as poll watchers. Get trained and have your local League or LWVIL issue you poll watcher credentials.
  3. Help recruit election judges in your local League area.
  4. Follow the Illinois State Board of Elections on social media and share their posts.
  5. Advertise how to report voter suppression in your area—use social media and letters to the editor.
  6. Advertise your local voter guide!
  7. Use League in Action to reach voters. Reach beyond the usual ‘League Bubble’ with the LWVUS app, which you can download on your phone.
  8. Be aware of potential election disruptions and respond appropriately. (see below)
  9. Make a plan to observe post-election ballot certification.
  10. Link to LWVIL’s Misinformation and Disinformation resources from your social media and share these resources. Inoculation messaging NOW is important to prepare for post-election issues.

Voter Service

Serve as a Poll Watcher

As an important part of our Rapid Response Team, poll watchers play a key role in ensuring free and fair elections. Their purpose is to observe the conduct of the election—with their prime concern being the integrity and fairness of the process.

LWVIL encourages any member who is trained as a poll watcher to consider obtaining credentials and observing early voting or on November 5. For more information on credentials or for areas of most need, contact voterservice@lwvil.org.

The basics of poll watching have not changed over the last few years, so if you have trained with LWVIL or one of our partner organizations, like the ACLU, Common Cause or NAACP, that is all you need as background.

Following are resources from the Illinois State Board of Elections to brush up on dos and don’ts. You’ll also find these on the LWVIL Member Resources page under Voter Service.

Lastly, if you observe something that should not be happening at the polling place, remember to call or text the ‪‪Election Protection Hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683).

Candidate Forums

Please submit information on your League's candidate forums to voterservice@lwvil.org to promote on LWVIL's website. If your forum was recorded, send us a link, and we'll also include it in the Illinois Voter Guide.
