Dear Cactus and Pine Member:
In our continuing efforts to build and enhance relationships with influential decision and policy makers, we had another conference call with Jeff Small, the Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Interior, David Bernhardt. The call was set up by Rory Van Poucke and included Shawn Emerson, Jeff Jensen, Rory Van Poucke and myself.
The Secretary of Interior is responsible for the management and conservation of most federal land and natural resources. He oversees such agencies as The Bureau of Land Management, the United States Geological Survey and the National Park Service.
Mr. Small has a good understanding of golf course superintendent and the challenges we face. He briefly explained his responsibilities working with the Secretary, who happened to be in Arizona recently, making stops in Prescott and working with the Parks Service on the second phase of opening the Grand Canyon, among other things.
We tag teamed the conversation and explained some of the challenges that we are facing as a golf industry here in AZ, including: water issues, tourism and dealing with Covid-19, etc. He expressed interest in getting as much factual information as possible from us so we briefly talked about our Economic Impact study that was done in 2014 and the fact that we would like to update it with more current data. He already has a copy of the old study and Jeff Jensen has already sent him our Best Management Practices (BMP’s).
These calls not only get our name out there to influential decision makers but they also allow us the opportunity to tell our side of the story and ensure that we share factual information. I want to thank Rory for setting up these calls as they are very important in keeping golf sustainable in the future.
It is our intent to have more of these calls in the future.
