Empire State Building will light up tonight
for National Travel and Tourism Week

National Travel and Tourism Week  2018 (NTTW) kicked off on Sunday, with hundreds of events planned by cities and destinations across the country. This year’s theme, “Travel Then and Now,” recognizes the accomplishments of the industry over the past decades, while also serving as an opportunity to highlight the principle at the heart of the U.S. travel industry: America’s welcoming spirit toward visitors from around the world.

In addition to the proclamations, events, luncheons, press conferences and award ceremonies being planned around the country, New York City’s  Empire State Building  will light up in red—the official color of the travel industry—on May 8 in celebration of Travel Rally Day.

The impact and importance of travel and tourism and the role of exponential changes in technology were the focal points of a general session at the 2018 UMA Motorcoach EXPO. To see a video presentation of Michael Dominguez highlighting the disruptive forces shaking the economy and what it means for our industry, go to UMA On Demand and watch one of the top-rated EXPO general session speakers. UMA Membership dues will increase beginning in July
The UMA Membership Recruitment/Retention Committee met last week and approved a 5% dues increase effective July 1, 2018. The last time dues were increased was 3 years ago – July, 2015. Membership dues help support UMA’s advocacy efforts and member programs that help promote successful bus and motorcoach companies. The dues increase will affect new and renewing members starting July, 2018.
Has your company returned its ballot to amend the UMA Bylaws?

Just another reminder! UMA members should check their email inboxes for notification of an official ballot regarding a change to the organization's bylaws. Those who have not yet voted will receive reminder emails sent to their company's primary email address on file.

The proposed amendment to the UMA Bylaws would modify the coachbuilder representation on the UMA Board of Directors. The change would allow greater representation of the Coachbuilder Members within the industry on the UMA Board of Directors without reapportioning the voting structure originally established for the association. These individuals will be considered  ex-officio  (non-voting) members of the Board and will appoint one individual to cast a vote on behalf of the entire group. This will also allow the highest-level sponsors of the association to be present at the association's business meetings and share insights they may have gathered through their multiple locations throughout the country.

Balloting ends on May 30 and the results will be reported here and in Bus & Motorcoach News.
Bus & Motorcoach News is mailed twice monthly to all UMA members. In addition, it's available online 24/7 at and by email, on a schedule you choose! Invite everyone on your staff to stay informed about the industry by signing up for email updates from Bus & Motorcoach News . Sign up here.
Digital cameras could soon replace rear-vision mirrors
April 27, 2018  |  by Bus & Motorcoach News   |

WASHINGTON – Federal regulators are considering a request by Stoneridge Inc. to allow commercial motor vehicles to use the company’s new MirrorEye Camera Monitor System as an alternative to rear-vision mirrors.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently finished accepting comments on Stoneridge’s request that the MirrorEye be allowed to serve as a substitute for the two rear-vision mirrors, one on each side of the vehicle, currently required by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

When UMA members wanted travel insurance products to better serve their customers and there was no reliable product on the market, we went to work with Sharon Broo of USI Affinity Travel Insurance Services to craft a high quality comprehensive program that would protect consumers and also give UMA members a revenue stream. The result is a win-win proposition. Listen to a recent podcast about the program and hear what Sharon had to say about the potential and benefits of this important member program. Technical ignorance is not leadership
May 7, 2018 | by Danny Crichton | TechCrunch   |

Can today's leaders – in any field, afford to be ignorant when it comes to technology? Danny Crichton, writing for TechCrunch, explores the common but dangerous trend of abdicating to the experts when it comes to technological literacy. To illustrate his point, he recounts not only the obvious Congressional lack of technological expertise during the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica hearings but also points the finger at "business executives, lawyers, doctors or consultants," who do not take seriously the importance of being tech savvy.

" CEOs, senators, and other leaders are synthesizers," Crichton says. "They rely on staff to handle the details so they can focus on strategy. We would never trust a CEO who brushed off an accountant by saying 'I don’t do cash flows,' and we shouldn’t trust a CEO who doesn’t understand how the internet works."
