The Star Festival

By Moni Ritchie Hadley. Illustrated by Mizuho Fujisawa

Tanabata Matsuri or the Star Festival celebrates a popular folktale: the Emperor of the Heavens separates his daughter from her love all year—but on this day the two stars finally reunite, crossing a bridge over the Milky Way.

For Keiko, Mama, and Obaasan, Tanabata is about making tanzaku (wishes), taking in the colorful decorations, and eating delicious food. But when Obaasan gets lost in the crowd, Keiko and Mama must make their own bridge to find her again—and see if their tanzaku comes true.

A Humble Man: 442nd Veteran Hiroshi Kunimura Honored at Ireichō

Hiroshi Kunimura is one of only a few 442nd Regimental Combat Team veterans who are still alive and active today. Kunimura and his family stamped the Ireichō to honor him and some of his loved ones, including his former Poston girlfriend.

The Power of Irei is a series that honors individuals listed in the Ireichō by interviewing people connected to the incarceration and offering insights into the impact this project has made on their lives.

Got a Work Truck Story? We Want to Hear It!

We are looking for images of local Japanese Americans with their work trucks, vans, and cars. Many people may have posed in front of their family cars but we know there are also photos of people with their utility vehicles too. We want to make sure these—and the people behind them—are properly represented in our exhibition.

Right now, we prefer to look at digital scans (if possible). Please send them to [email protected] by July 31, 2023.

Nikkei Car Culture

We’re looking for family photos and home movies depicting people’s relationship to their cars for loan to JANM or a potential donation to the permanent collection. These images can be people driving, cruising, and racing cars, or family photos and movies shot in front of cars or taken during road trips. We are especially interested in photos and movies from the 1930s through 1980s.

Please email [email protected].
