DOL Announces Revised Overtime Rule Will Be Published in March 2019
Changes to the White Collar Exemptions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) are coming, very slowly. Back in May 2016, the Department of Labor (DOL) issued a Final Rule updating the regulations for the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime executive, administrative, and professional exemptions. That rule would, among other things, have increased the minimum salary required for most employees within these exemptions from $455 a week ($23,660 a year) to $913 a week ($47,476 a year), meaning anyone falling below the minimum salary would potentially be eligible for overtime wages.
In November 2016, a federal judge in Texas instructed that regulation just nine days before it was to go into effect. In July 2017, the DOL issued a Request for Information seeking public comment on a whole series of questions relating to whether and how the DOL should update the existing regulations. The DOL has now indicated that it will issue a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking regarding these exemption regulations in March 2019.

The Negative Impact of a Vacant Position
Julie Rupenski, President & Founder, MedBest
Due to the booming economy, job candidates are turning down more job offers now than they did one year ago. What once seemed like an enticing offer then, may now seem average to them. This trend is expected to continue into the foreseeable future. Combining this dilemma with the fact that
10,000 Baby Boomers are retiring each day
, means we could see a number of open positions that could remain vacant for an extended period of time.
Industries that deal with people’s health are in a more precarious position. Vacancies of
senior health care executives
and providers within the senior living industry could adversely affect the quality of care that a facility provides. However, that’s not the only negative impact of a vacant position. One or more of the following may also happen:

Valuable Informational Resources For FSLA Members Provided By SocialWork.org
Social workers are vital for our community's health. However, the opioid crisis currently gripping our nation has created an even greater demand for social workers, as both treatment programs and child welfare services are overwhelmed. With projections estimating that the social work sector will grow by
16% in the next 10 years
, the importance of educating and ensuring a steady labor force for the future cannot be understated.
In response to this need for social workers, the team at SocialWork.org put together a series of useful guides breaking down what earning a degree in the field entails. Licensing and certification information, scholarship opportunities, and a directory of universities offering social work programs are included. In addition, we discuss online options that offer a flexibility often preferable to nontraditional students. You can check out our work below:
