Education Background:
MS-ILS, Masters in Teaching, NYS Licensed Massage Therapist
What was your professional background before your current position?
I worked at the Newfield Public Library and the Durland Alternatives Library at Cornell, known for its social justice collection and other unique materials. Prior to working in libraries, I taught in a public high school and in an adult career program. I also owned a small business.
Describe your current position:
My work focuses on meeting the needs of our member libraries, especially around issues of policy, procedures, regulations, marketing, and social media. I also provide support for member libraries working with youth ages 0-18 and manage our system’s e-content.
What do you like best about your work?
Because member libraries have different needs, every day is different. I get to wear many hats, meet interesting people and am encouraged to learn new things.
What has been your biggest professional challenge?
Staying on top of trends and navigating an ever-growing and changing world of information. Oh, and keeping all the acronyms straight!
How are you seeing issues of diversity, equity and inclusion play a more prominent role in your work environment?
FLLS started a Social Justice Book Club in 2020. I participated when I was a librarian at a member library and still do in my new role. FLLS is developing a DEI Committee to work on diversity audits, community engagement, and organize professional development opportunities. I’m also noticing some grant applications thoughtfully asking about the role of DEI in a library’s proposal.
What other organizations are you involved with?
NYLA, ALA, NYS Climate Smart Communities, Energy Navigators
What advice would you give to someone new to the field?
Be open to learning on-the-job and making mistakes. Don’t be shy about asking questions--librarians love to share information! And know that you, too, have much to offer.
Are there any tips you would like to share that have helped you get things done over the last year?
I’m grateful for the privilege to walk in nature; sometimes alone, sometimes with companions. Physical movement helps me move (get things done) in other areas of my life.
Favorite blog or website:
What are you most proud of?
That I’m learning to communicate better in all areas of my life.
What is one thing you would you like to learn?
Just one? Right now, I’d like to learn how to safely use an electric chainsaw/ chop wood.
What are you most looking forward to doing this fall?
Attending a Cornell Women’s Hockey game. I missed that last year.
Thank you Heidi!
