Kendyl Litwiller-Sutherby

(she/her)

Engagement Consultant

Southern Tier Library System

Education Background:

B.F.A. with a double major in Performing Arts and English Literature from Niagara University and an Advanced Certificate in Public Library Administration from LIU Post

What was your professional background before your current position?

I have been working in libraries since 2017 in various roles. I started as a part time clerk, then planned programming, took on book keeping and administrative tasks, and I was a Director for 3 years.

Describe your current position and what do you like best about it:

In my current position, I provide support and resources to our member libraries on their websites, digital resources, annual reports, marketing and oversee our Overdrive purchasing. I also have a role in planning our annual Advocacy Day in Albany. What I like best about my role at STLS is being able to work with other library professionals (in our office, across the region and across the state) to provide services and support to our member libraries. I enjoy being a part of a mission driven and service based organization.

What has been your biggest professional challenge?

Library construction. During my time as a Director, I was tasked with leading a building expansion and maintaining library operations during that time. It was a challenge, but I had a great staff that was willing to be flexible so we could keep our building open to the public during the project.

Have you seen any shifts towards sustainability in the workplace that you think would be useful in other libraries or institutions?

STLS has a small compost bin in our kitchen area. I really appreciate having that option for food waste.

How are you supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in your work environment?

I am currently working on learning more about the ins and outs of web accessibility. This is a very nuanced topic, so in my monthly newsletter to our member libraries I have been including "Accessibility Tips" as a way to educate about web accessibility that is easy to understand and (hopefully) not overwhelming.

What advice would you give to someone new to the field?

Keep learning and keep challenging yourself.

Are there any tips you would like to share that help you get things done?

I am very much a list person. It helps me keep track of all of my tasks and I get instant gratification when I cross completed items off the list.

What are you most proud of?

I'm proud of how far I've come professionally and personally. When I started as a part time library clerk in 2017, I never would have guessed that this is where I would have ended up. I've always looked at every new challenge and opportunity as a chance to grow and learn, and that is what got me here.

What is one thing you would you like to learn?

I would love to learn how to sew my own clothes.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

I am looking forward to enjoying as much time as possible outdoors, especially in my garden.

Thank you Kendyl!
