Shauna-Kay G. Harrison

(she/her)

Digital Archivist

The University Libraries at Alfred University

Education Background:

Master of Science in Information, University of Michigan School of Information

What was your professional background before your current position?

I am a recent graduate of the University of Michigan School of Information. While there, I worked for the University of Michigan Libraries' Digital Preservation Lab, gaining experience with web archiving; disk imaging and digital forensic tools; and digital asset management systems.

What do you like best about your work?

My current role is new and allows me to define what I want it to encompass in the long term. In particular, I'm excited to build a culture of digital scholarship among students and faculty on campus.

What has been your biggest professional challenge?

Since I am a new librarian/archivist, my role is quite a steep learning curve. The university library I work for did not previously have an institutional, or rather, "systematic," digital preservation program. It will definitely be a challenge to get this up and running but looking forward to it nonetheless!

How are you seeing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility play a more prominent role in your work environment?

Our biggest concern currently is access to our physical and archival holdings. On the one hand, we would like access to our digital collections to be more readily available and on a more user-friendly platform. On the other hand, we would like to catalog our physical holdings as a way to encourage the visitation and use of our physical archives.

A long term goal of mine is to really highlight the lives and histories of marginalized groups on campus; to make more visible aspects of their lives that are preserved in our archives and highlight where they are missing.

What other organizations are you involved with?

I am currently a member of and would like to become more involved with SUNYLA, MARAC, and the VRA.
