Why are you members of the Land Trust?
We live here because it is beautiful and a great place to raise a family. We recognize that both of those attributes are dependent on preservation of our natural resources. And we see the Land Trust as another tool to help conserve those resources.

Which Land Trust properties are your favorites?
There are a few places scattered along Frederica Road between Bennie's and the north roundabout and they make a tremendous difference in the atmosphere of that area. We often think about how that area would be if it were packed with housing the whole length of the road: less peaceful and green.
Casey and Zach Harris moved to St. Simons in 2011. Zach grew up visiting the island for vacation and weekend getaways, and they both loved to hop over for date nights whenever they would spend time with Zach’s family in Jesup, GA, where he grew up. Casey was from the east coast as well, but much further north in Valley Stream, NY. She remembers the first time Zach took her to St. Simons. “We went kayaking through the marsh and out at Gould’s Inlet to East Beach…I had no idea at the time that I would be fortunate enough to live here one day.” They both loved the idea of feeling that they are "living on vacation," so their decision to move to the island permanently wasn’t a difficult one to make.

Raising their children on island time is a dream that has become a reality too. Both Harris boys, Zachary (almost 3) and Nicholas (1) were born in coastal Georgia. And Casey and Zach are determined to raise them to love the beach as much as they do. “Our beach time has changed since having kids; it’s a lot more active, but also a lot more fun. The boys love the water.” Zachary can spend hours just poking around the water’s edge looking at shells and crabs with Zach, while Nicholas loves taking beach walks with Casey.
When they’re not at the beach with their boys or out enjoying St. Simons’ best food spots, Zach and Casey are spending time practicing their other passion – law. Casey is a partner of Choate Harris, P.C., practicing in businesses, estate planning, and tax law while Zach is an attorney at Hunter Maclean in their real estate group. Prior to his current job, Zach was in-house council at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. He also serves as a member of the Coastal Marshlands and Shore Protection Committees. These roles are part of what inspired Zach to become a member of the Land Trust so many years ago. He says he “sees the Land Trust as another tool to help conserve our coastal resources by preserving the low-country maritime forests that give our coast its unique character.” He and Casey wanted to be a small part of that effort.

In early summer of 2019, Casey became more involved with the Land Trust by joining its growing group of Ambassadors. As an Ambassador, Casey hopes to recruit more young families who want to make sure the island is just as beautiful for their children as it has been for them. “I hope that my involvement with the Land Trust will, in some small way, make the incoming generation of local leaders attuned to the issues of preservation of this island’s land and character.” As the Land Trust continues its increased focus on perpetual land management and outreach, Casey also hopes there will be an emphasis on education, “especially for children who will be thrilled to learn what amazing natural wonders exist all around them on the island.”
