Dear Nevada AAP Members,

This past Thursday, July 21, Nevada AAP Obesity Prevention Chair Steven Shane, MD, MS, FAAP, Dipl. of ABOM, was invited to give a presentation to the Nevada Joint Interim Standing Committee on Health and Human Services on ways the state legislature can support community-based obesity prevention programs (and why). It is well worth a watch and stands as a great example to other chapter members looking to get more involved in advocacy work.

Dr. Shane's presentation starts at around the 2:47 mark. Also, FYI, my public comment, which I commonly make at these meetings, starts around the :36 mark.

Although chapter members who wish to advocate in the name of our organization must coordinate your efforts with the Nevada AAP Executive Committee, as individuals, you can, and should, raise your voice. Visit NevadaAAP.org/advocacy to learn more about our chapter's advocacy work and access resources to become an advocate yourself.

Please read on in this newsletter to learn of the many recent projects of Nevada AAP members to improve pediatric outcomes in our state as well as learn of opportunities and events for you to engage in.

Be well,

Leann

UPDATES
Dr. Strominger Co-authors AAP Policy
Nevada AAP Vice President/President Elect Mitchell Strominger, MD, FAAP is one of the co-authors of the AAP's newest clinic report and policy statement to provide guidance to pediatricians on vision disorders following a concussion.

The policy statement is called, “Vision and Concussion: Symptoms, Signs, Evaluation, and Treatment.” The policy statement, and an accompanying clinical report, “Evaluation of the Visual System by the Primary Care Provider Following Concussion,” will be published in the August 2022 Pediatrics (published online July 18).

Dr. Strominger will be at the Nevada AAP July 30 virtual member meeting to answer questions about this policy statement as well as give insights into the long, sometimes frustrating, process of creating an AAP policy. All chapter members are welcome but must register here by noon on Friday, July 29.

Drs. Hendrickson and Wijesinghe in the News
Nevada AAP chapter members talk with journalists and write op-eds to provide accurate and reliable medical information to the public.

Recent notable contributions include Nevada AAP Chapter Climate Advocate Debra Hendrickson, MD, FAAP co-authoring Cleaning our air through a vehicle repair and replace program with Melissa Ramos of the American Lung Association in the Nevada Independent and Carrie Wijesinghe, MD, FAAP speaking with KLAS about the AAP's updated breastfeeding recommendations.

Successfully working with the media requires planning, strategy, hard work, and allocation of resources. The AAP provides tools to help pediatricians ensure that journalists get the most accurate information possible on pediatric issues. Visit Working with the Media (requires member login) to learn more about the many resources from the AAP to support public relations work.
