I hope many of you will register to join the April 30th Quarterly Virtual Member Meeting featuring a presentation by Nevada AAP Board Member Oriaku "Dr. Kas" Kas-Osoka, MD, MEd, FAAP on adolescent confidentiality best practices.

In addition to quarterly virtual meetings for members, we are also planning two in-person networking events in 2022. Save these dates:

Two Blog Posts
Since our last Member Update newsletter, we've added two wonderful blog posts that are worth a read.

The first, from Megan Rescigno, MS4, University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, shines a light on the meaningful way pediatricians can influence public policy when they share their stories and experiences with elected officials. Case in point: Senator Jacky Rosen has signed on to co-sponsor S.3864, one of the bills Ms. Rescigno was advocating for during the AAP Advocacy Conference last month. Advocacy works!

The second blog post announces the new leadership role Nevada AAP Chapter President Vanessa Slots, MD, FAAP has taken with the monthly Nevada Complex Pediatrics ECHO. Dr. Slots is joining Nevada AAP Board Member Kathryn Eckert, MD, FAAP to lead this valuable free state resource for Nevada pediatricians. All members are encouraged to attend these virtual events for free CME the second Friday of every month at noon.

Nevada Chapter Leader Elected to National Leadership Role
Please join us in congratulating Nevada AAP Board Member Jose Cucalon Calderon, MD, FAAP who has been elected to the AAP Section on Nicotine and Tobacco Prevention and Treatment (SONTPT) Executive Committee! Dr. Cucalon Calderon's term will begin in November.

Dr Cucalon Calderon is an Assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. He also serves as the Nevada AAP Chapter E-cigarette champion. In addition, Dr Cucalon Calderon was also recently elected to the Nevada Tobacco Prevention Coalition Board and is advocating publicly through
the state for total indoor clean air laws.

2022 Nevada Provider Summit
On April 19, Nevada AAP Executive Director Leann McAllister joined hundreds of doctors and legislators for the first-ever Nevada Provider Summit at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Hosted by Governor Steve Sisolak, speakers included Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen, Representative Susie Lee, and a special keynote from United States Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra.

The day included in-depth panel presentations on many of the issues Nevada AAP has been advocating for including behavioral health care gaps for children, Nevada Medicaid, workforce development, and housing as healthcare.
Supporting Children’s Mental Health Care Access Act of 2022
The Nevada Chapter was one of 17 AAP Chapters to join the AAP and other national organizations in a letter to Senators Chris Murphy and Bill Cassidy, MD, thanking them for for introducing the Supporting Children’s Mental Health Care Access Act of 2022. If passed, the act would reauthorize the Pediatric Mental Health Care Access (PMHCA) program for another five years to better promote the integration of behavioral health and primary care for children.

Here in Nevada, the PMHCA is currently supporting the free Nevada Pediatric Access Line (PAL) program which makes child & adolescent psychiatry consultation immediately available to any primary care clinicians in Nevada — regardless of their resources or where they live. To date, hundreds of Nevada PCPs have joined PAL. The Nevada AAP encourages all chapter members to give the line a try and to provide feedback to [email protected].

In addition to providing peer-to-peer doctor consults, the PAL line also creates and distributes helpful handouts for pediatricians like this one on Youth and Major Depressive Disorder. Worth a read!
