Higher SOL cut scores coming, but not this year
On November 14, 2025, the State Board of Education endorsed a four-year phased plan to raise expectations set by the Youngkin Administration. The goal is to better align the state's benchmarks, or cut scores, with the rigor of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). What the Board endorsed HERE.

The current school year will serve as the preparation year, with the proficient cut score staying at 400. The Commonwealth will begin gradually increasing cut scores starting in 2026-2027.
