MASHPEE WOMEN’S CLUB SEPTEMBER 15TH LUNCHEON FEATURES POPULAR SPEAKER GREG WILLIAMS PRESENTING
“SEDUCER OF SOULS: SANDWICH’S BATHSHEBA SPOONER AND THE FIRST US DEATH-PENALTY CASE”
Well-known historian and popular speaker Greg Williams will present a fascinating mid-Revolutionary War local tale of a bold conspiracy, a gruesome murder, and its dire consequences at Mashpee Women’s Club’s September 15th luncheon at Noon at the Popponessett Inn, New Seabury. This interesting bit of local history involves the murder of Joshua Spooner and the subsequent conviction of Spooner’s wife, Bathsheba Ruggles Spooner, born in Sandwich. Also tried and convicted were Spooner’s three co-conspirators: her lover, a teenage Colonial solder, and two escaped British POWs. The infamous murder trial of Bathsheba Spooner was the first capital case in the newly formed United States and pre-dated Massachusetts’s adoption of a constitution. Bathsheba’s attorney was Levi Lincoln, Attorney General for Thomas Jefferson and whose son became the state’s long-serving governor.
Williams is known to captivate his audiences with his oratory skills, his historical perspective and his sharp wit. Williams is a retired judge who served 15 years on the Massachusetts District Court bench, the last ten as First Justice of Edgartown District Court and as Presiding Justice of the Southern District of the Appellate Division. A resident of Barnstable, Williams was recently elected as President of the Sturgis Library Board of Trustees.
Social Distancing Guidelines will limit the number of attendees and masks are required. . The cost is $25 for members, $30 for guests. Reservations must be received by September 8. MWC, P.O. Box 1613, Mashpee, MA 02649. MWC is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization which donates to many charities on Cape Cod through its fund raising activities, special events, monthly luncheons and other activities. Information about MWC, its mission, programs and major charitable donations are featured on its website at http://www.mashpeewomensclub.org.

Are you up for a Challenge?
Our Annual RUCK4HIT Relay Event has taken on a New Face due to COVID-19
Mark your calendars for The "Not your Ordinary RUCK4HIT Challenge Weekend"
September 26-27, 2020
Looking for something to train for this summer while supporting a great cause? Do you like to ruck, run, walk, bike, paddle, swim or hike? Create a team, join a team, or participate solo and help us to raise awareness and funds for Heroes In Transition!
All miles that you cover during the weekend will count towards the overall goal - to see how many miles we can collectively ruck, run, walk, bike, paddle, swim, or hike while wearing a ruck sack, backpack or something similar. " As every service member is forced to carry the burden of war during active service and beyond, carrying the ruck sack is symbolic of hardships endured and the perseverance required to complete the mission."
