City of Mission project seeks to beautify homes

City leaders want to help Mission residents beautify their homes.

As part of the Paint Mission Beautiful Project, volunteers will repaint homes and fix up yards across town.

It’s the second year the city has been doing it.

The city will choose the homes based on the need and state of the home.

All the materials for this project will be donated by local businesses, and the goal is to fix up as many homes as they can throughout the year.

Homeowners can drop off the application to qualify for the program, or even sign up to be a volunteer.

The homes will begin to be repainted in April.

Homeowners must have disabilities or be at least 60 years old and live within city limits to qualify.

Mission Fire Department’s

“Fireline Chronicles”

February 2024 Edition

By: Adrian Garcia, Fire Chief

In our forthcoming edition of Fireline Chronicles, we are ignited with excitement as we usher in a new era of fire and emergency medical services into our community. We eagerly introduce our new Mission Fire Department employees who will be serving our community and bid farewell to one of our Deputy Fire Chiefs as he retires from our department. Join us as we illuminate the path forward, forging stronger bonds with our community and igniting the flames of progress.

Once more, this column is a unique opportunity for our department to connect, share information, and foster an open dialogue with the incredible community we proudly serve.

From the Desk of Fire Chief Adrian Garcia

I am honored to share with you the strides our Mission Fire Department has taken in enhancing our response capabilities to better serve and protect our community. Over the past months, we embarked on a comprehensive journey to assess and address the dynamic risks and challenges facing our city.

First and foremost, we conducted a thorough Threat and Hazard Identification Risk Assessment (THIRA), meticulously pinpointing the specific threats and hazards that pose potential harm to our community. This assessment laid the groundwork for understanding the unique challenges we face and provided crucial insights into where our focus should lie.

Building upon this foundation, we then conducted vulnerability and needs assessments to identify operational gaps and deficiencies within our department. Through these assessments, we gained invaluable clarity on what resources and strategies are necessary to bolster our preparedness and resilience.

Furthermore, our commitment to transparency and collaboration was demonstrated through meet-and-greet sessions with various members of our department, city departments, and community stakeholders. These sessions facilitated open dialogue, enabling us to identify our strengths, weaknesses, and potential opportunities for improvement. Armed with this collective wisdom, we are strategically enacting changes to our policies, procedures, and administrative processes.

Our efforts have been focused on enhancing communications, fortifying organizational structure, and fostering accountability throughout the department. By implementing these changes, we aim not only to improve our response capabilities but also build stronger bonds with our community. Together, we stand resilient in the face of adversity, ready to safeguard the well-being of all Mission residents.

In the spirit of growth and renewal, we are delighted to welcome two new members to our team, Adelina Reyna and Juanita Alvarez, who join us as our new Administrative Assistants. In addition to our announcements, we extend heartfelt congratulations to Jackie Charles for being awarded the Employee of the Month for February 2024. Jackie's dedication, exemplary work ethic, and outstanding contributions have set a shining example for us all. We applaud her commitment to excellence and thank her for her continued dedication to the Mission Fire Department and our community. Well done, Jackie!

Community Engagement

In January & February, the Mission Fire Department proudly engaged in two significant events, highlighting our unwavering commitment to both public safety and community service. Firstly, our department played a vital role in ensuring the success and safety of the Citrus Fiesta Parade, where we showcased our department's capabilities while actively giving back to our community. It was a momentous occasion to not only demonstrate our proficiency in handling emergencies but also to strengthen our bonds with the community we serve.

Additionally, our department spearheaded and participated in a full-scale hazardous materials exercise, collaborating seamlessly with the 6th Civil Support Team and multiple mutual aid resources from across the Rio Grande Valley. This exercise was a testament to our department's dedication to preparedness and interagency cooperation. We extend our deepest gratitude to the McAllen FD, Pharr FD, Pharr EMS, Weslaco FD, Palmview FD, and Edinburg FD for their invaluable assistance during the exercise. Moreover, we commend all the Mission FD personnel who participated in the exercise, showcasing professionalism, expertise, and unwavering dedication. It is truly an honor to work alongside such exemplary professionals as we continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our community.

Department Transparency

In a proactive effort to enhance our ability to meet the diverse needs of our community, the Mission Fire Department recently underwent a strategic realignment of personnel and resources. This adjustment aimed to ensure a more balanced distribution of capabilities and skill sets across all shifts, thereby optimizing our capacity to provide effective and efficient emergency response services to residents.

One significant aspect of this realignment involved the meticulous balancing of EMS providers across each shift. By strategically placing all levels of EMS providers on each shift, including an ample number of paramedics, we have ensured the availability of a minimum of 3 to 4 Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICU) during each shift. This elevated level of EMS provision represents our unwavering commitment to delivering the highest standard of pre-hospital care to our community members in their time of need.

Moreover, the realignment process also extended to bolstering our special operations capabilities. Personnel were carefully balanced to ensure the availability of expertise in hazardous materials response, technical rescue operations, and water rescue capabilities across all shifts. This comprehensive approach equips us to effectively address a wide array of emergency scenarios and provide timely assistance in even the most challenging circumstances.

This realignment marks just the initial phase of our ongoing efforts to reevaluate and optimize our resources, capabilities, and equipment. By continuously assessing and adjusting our deployment strategies, we are committed to ensuring that our personnel are strategically positioned and equipped to deliver the most effective emergency response services to our community. Together, we remain steadfast in our mission to safeguard the well-being and safety of all residents of Mission.

Looking Ahead

As we bid farewell to the month of February, the Mission Fire Department extends heartfelt gratitude to our community for their steadfast support. We are thrilled to extend an invitation to join us for a special occasion – the Medic 3 Push-In Ceremony and Open House, scheduled for March 26, 2024, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at MFD Station 3, located at 1804 S. Shary Rd.

This event holds significant importance as we commemorate the introduction of one of our new ambulances into service. We invite you to witness a cherished tradition in the fire service as we come together to push in our new apparatus, symbolizing its integration into our fleet and its dedication to serving the residents of our community.

Join us for an evening of celebration, camaraderie, and community spirit as we mark this milestone and showcase the capabilities of our department. We look forward to welcoming you and expressing our gratitude for your continued support. Hope to see you there!

We are committed to evolving and growing as a department, and “Fireline Chronicles” is a step towards building a stronger, more resilient Mission. Stay tuned for more insights, and let’s keep the fire of communication burning bright.
