Junie and July want to make sure you kick off summer right with June Dairy Month. Read below to see what Hansen's Dairy is doing across the Cedar Valley this month!

Cash Cow

We had one winner in our May CA$H COW contest. Congrats to Jody Connor of Cedar Falls, who found a $5 jug. Since no one found any $100 jugs, we will label six jugs with $100 in June. Best chance to find one is right away at the beginning of the month! But make sure to keep looking throughout the month as we mark ten $5 jugs every week!

Look inside the jug toward the label to see a "5" or "100".

Scooter is getting used to her new home. Scooter will be bottle fed and have her diaper changed while she's inside. She'll also spend a lot of time hanging out in her homemade "pouch." Hands-on tour participants will be able to see her beginning June 13! Call 319-988-9834 to make tour reservations. $12 per person includes riding the trolley, milking a cow, feeding a calf, making butter, trying our products and petting a kangaroo!

Customer of the Month
Kim Delagardelle
The June Customer of the Month is Kim Delagardelle of Waterloo.

Kim and her family began regularly shopping at Hansen's Dairy stores when they were looking for antibiotic- and hormone-free products.

Kim also uses an eating plan called THM (Trim Healthy Mama) that does not mix carbs and fats in the same meal. Two Hansen's products that play a role in Kim's eating plan are skim milk and the 96% lean ground beef from our retired dairy cows. The lean ground beef is a "rare product," Kim says. "It is so convenient - no rinsing needed!"

Plus, skim milk is a flexible product that fits in with both types of meals through THM. "I also love Hansen's skim milk to make yogurt and cottage cheese," she says.

Thanks, Kim! Customers of the Month will receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $24 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our Facebook page.
Cow of the Month
We've selected our oldest cow to represent June Dairy Month.

Len was born 13 years ago, the same year we started our on-farm creamery. She has had 10 calves -- 5 heifers and 5 bulls. In fact, Len is a great-great-great grandmother to a calf named Licorice born on the farm last September. How's that for a family tree?

She has surpassed 300,000 pounds of milk in her lifetime - that's almost 35,000 gallons! Normal cow life expectancy is about 12-15 years. She will soon be retiring from milk production and will live out her days here on the farm. We think she's earned it.

If you've been on a farm tour, you've most certainly seen Len walking around free. We don't want her in with the other cows with the possibility of her slipping and falling, so she roams the farm by herself. Here she's enjoying some fresh alfalfa but also gets into grain meant for other ages of cows. Still mischievous, even at her age!

Indy 500 milk-drenching tradition continues
Jamie Squire/Getty Images

Did you see Takuma Sato drench himself in milk after winning Sunday's Indy 500?

The milk tradition began after the 1933 race, when winning driver Louis Meyer asked for a glass of buttermilk to rejoice and quench his thirst. Meyer again drank a glass of his favorite beverage in Victory Lane after winning the race three years later.

From that point, milk was served to the winner of the Indy 500 off and on until Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Anton Hulman made it a permanent fixture of the race in 1956.

The award has even been voted as "Sports Coolest Prize" by Sports Illustrated in 2005. It topped other prizes and trophies like the Heisman Trophy, the Kentucky Derby's Blanket of Roses, the Olympic Gold Medal, the Masters' Green Jacket and hockey's Stanley Cup.

Prior to the race a preference poll is taken from the 33 Indy 500 drivers to see what kind of milk they would like. This year 17 drivers asked for whole milk, 12 wanted 2% milk, three wanted fat-free milk and one driver had no preference.

Red, White and Blue Berry Trifle
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour, 45 minutes
Yield: One 9-inch trifle

INGREDIENTS
    For the Butter Pound Cake:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Hansen's salted butter, at room temperature*
  • Seeds of 1 vanilla bean or 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 5 large eggs, at room temperature*

  • For the Whipped Cream & Berries:
  • 3 cups Hansen's heavy cream*
  • 1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 lb. fresh strawberries, stemmed and sliced vertically* (Bagge strawberries available this month)
  • 1 1/2 pints fresh raspberries
  • 1 1/2 pints fresh blueberries
DIRECTIONS
For the Cake:
Preheat oven to 325°F. Butter and flour 9-inch loaf pan.
Sift flour into small bowl. Set aside. Put butter, vanilla and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat on medium speed until light and pale, 3 to 5 minutes. Add eggs one at a time; beat well with each addition.
With mixer on low, add flour to butter mixture gradually until it is fully incorporated; do not overmix. Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth top with spatula. Bake until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean, about 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes. Cool cake on wire rack for 15 minutes. Turn cake out onto cooling rack. Allow cake to cool completely and then cut into cubes using a serrated knife.
To Assemble the Trifle:
Beat heavy whipping cream in electric mixer fitted with whip attachment at medium-high speed. When cream begins to thicken gradually add granulated sugar.
Cover bottom of 9-inch trifle dish with single layer of pound cake cubes. Spoon 1/3 of whipped cream over cake and spread so that cream touches edges of trifle bowl. Arrange strawberry slices in single line vertically against side of trifle bowl (moisture from berries will make them stick to bowl). Cover cream with remaining sliced strawberries and 1 pint of raspberries. Add second layer of whipped cream, and then top with blueberries. Add remaining cake cubes in center of blueberries and then top cake with remaining whipped cream. Arrange remaining raspberries around top edge of trifle.
Keep trifle refrigerated until ready to serve.
