I look forward to collaborating with all of you—our esteemed diplomates—as we embark on this shared journey.

Our newsletter serves as a vital conduit—a bridge that connects us across distances and time zones.

As we reflect on our board’s rich history, we also look ahead. The newsletter will be a chronicle of our collective achievements, a testament to the tireless efforts of our members. From recertification updates to glimpses of our annual conferences, we’ll celebrate milestones and share insights. Let’s honor the legacy of those who paved the way while forging new paths together.

Speaking of conferences, mark your calendars for the 2024 Desert Foot East Conference taking place June 1 - 2, 2024! These events are not just about lectures and workshops; they’re about camaraderie, networking, and the magic that happens when passionate minds converge. Let’s exchange ideas, challenge assumptions, and inspire one another.

Thank you for entrusting me with this role. Together, we’ll elevate our profession, elevate patient care, and elevate each other. If you have stories, research, or insights to share, please reach out—I’d love to feature your contributions in our future editions.

Wishing you all a rewarding year ahead. Let’s make footprints that leave lasting impressions.

ABPM: A Short History in Three Names

Looking back over the years we have a great background and history.

1975: The American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics (ABPO) is incorporated

1983: The American Board of Podiatric (ABPM) medicine is incorporated

1990: CPME reviews petitions from 5 organizations seeking to certify in Primary Podiatric Medicine

1992: CPME approves a joint petition by ABPO and ABPM to certify DPM's in Primary Podiatric Medicine. This Board incorporated as the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine (ABPOPPM)

1999: The Board combines the separate examinations in podiatric orthopedics and primary podiatric medicine into a single examination.

David H. George, DPM

Past-President, American Board of Podiatric Medicine

2009: ABPOPPM administers the first In-Training examination to residents and develops the Speakers Bureau

2011-12: The Board removes case documentation requirement for residents with 3 years of eligible training, exams converted to test center mediated format and oral examinations were eliminated.

2013: ABPOPPM launches a new website and branding to reflect name change to ABPM

2015: ABPM imitates the graduate Merit Program honoring outstanding students in podiatric medicine and podiatric orthopedics.

2016: ABPM to launch a process leading to CAQ in wound care/ amputation prevention

2018: ABPM Expands Eligibility Criteria for CAQ in Amputation Prevention and Wound Care.

2022: ABPM streamlines the certification process by combining the qualification and certification exams into one exam and eliminating the status of "Board Qualification"

The Board created a new status of Board Eligible which aligns with MD and DO boards and reduces confusion with hospital medical staff when applying for privileges.

Upon completion of an approved residency program the podiatrist is Board eligible until they pass the exam and become Board Certified or their eligibility expires [in 8 years]

Call for Residency Reviewers

One of the most important components of the CPME residency approval process is the team site visit. The site visit is a peer-review process that helps to enhance the quality of education by assessing a program’s compliance with CPME standards and requirements. CPME is committed to ensuring each evaluator possesses appropriate experience and skills essential to the evaluation process. CPME residency evaluators must be certified by one or both of the specialty boards recognized by the SBRC and should be either program directors or active faculty members of CPME-approved residencies.

Contact information for the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM), as well as a description of the ABPM-certified evaluator criteria, can be found at CPME.org/residencyevaluators.
