Build Your Own Compost Pile at Home!

Compost is one of nature's best mulches and soil amendments, as it uses natural organic matter that retains water to offer nutrient-rich soil to fuel plants' growth. Best of all, compost is cheap! You can make this "black gold" without spending a cent and use it instead of commercial fertilizers while helping to reduce landfill Learn Morewaste which is one third compostable material. Learn more about starting a compost pile at home.

Our compost pile is almost 7 acres! We receive leaves from the Town of Leesburg and the Town of Herndon along with manure from local farms which provides all the nitrogen-rich matter needed for a healthy balance. Compost naturally begins to heat up as it breaks down. It reaches temps higher then 140 degrees which kills bacteria and weed seeds. With regular turning, it takes 90 days for compost to break down enough before we spread it in our fields. Last year it took us an entire year to turn all of our compost using our loader. We are very excited to have added a Large Self Contained Compost Turner that can turn all of our compost every week. Check it out!
