National Eagle Scout Association Outstanding Eagle Scout Award

Each week between now and the Eagle Recognition Dinner, we will profile one of the NOESA recipients. This week we are recognizing Dan Kennedy.

Dan Kennedy is a professor of journalism at Northeastern University and a nationally known media commentator. Before coming to Northeastern in 2005, he worked as a reporter at The Daily Times Chronicle in Woburn, Mass., and, later, as the media columnist at The Boston Phoenix.

He is the author of four books; his most recent, co-written with retired Boston Globe editorial page editor Ellen Clegg, is titled What Works in Community News, and will be published by Beacon Press in 2024. He was also a panelist on the award-winning media program Beat the Press, on WGBH-TV (Channel 2), from 1998 to 2021. Kennedy is a leader in efforts to respond to the crisis in local news, and in 2019 he received the Yankee Quill Award, which recognizes a lifetime contribution toward excellence in journalism in New England.

Kennedy was a member of Boy Scout Troop 39 in Middleborough, Mass., where he earned his Eagle in 1971, and served as an adult leader in Cub Scout Pack 114 and Boy Scout Troop 16 in Danvers, Mass., including a stint as scoutmaster. He credits scouting with instilling a lifelong passion for the outdoors, and he has hiked to the summits of all 48 Four Thousand Footers in New Hampshire, starting in 1968 and finishing in 2007. His wife, Barbara Kennedy, was a Girl Scout leader, and their two adult children both earned scouting’s highest achievements: Tim Kennedy is an Eagle Scout and Becky Kennedy earned the Gold Award. Dan and Barbara live in Medford, Mass.
