For Those Who Would Like to Contribute!

Hi Members!!   We need financial contributions -- no matter how small  -- towards cash awards for the upcoming Members Exhibition.  This year the juror will award a total of $2550 in cash plus merchandise awards.  

 
We need to cover a $150 Pride of Denton Award (selected by Denton's Mayor Chris Watts) and a $100 Honorable Mention Award as well as monies towards the $750 Best of Show.  We already have great member support for other awards.  Every $ counts and is very welcome!!  You can name an award with a contribution of $100 or more.  Everyone will be acknowledged in the program.

We hope all of you bring a piece (or two) to the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center (formerly the Center for Visual Arts) on Wednesday, August 3, 10 am - 12 noon, and 4-7 pm.  Everyone gets one piece in!!  It is always a great exhibition and a fun opening party.

Juror: Colby Parsons , MFA, is an Associate Professor in 
Visual Art at Texas Woman's University, where he  teaches Ceramics and Emergent Media. Colby's work  explores the potential meanings and aesthetics  within the convergence of traditional and digital  media, and works in a range of media and formats  including ceramics, digital fabrication, projection 
mapping, and interactivity. Colby's work has been  shown nationally and internationally at venues  including Navy Pier in Chicago, the Taipei County  Yingge Ceramics Museum; the International Ceramic  Research Center in Denmark; the Orange County  Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Ana,  California; the University of Pennsylvania Art Museum; and in Dallas at the Craighead Green  Gallery, the Pawn Gallery, and 500X. In 2015, Colby  was awarded the $20,000 Zanesville Art Prize, the  most valuable ceramics prize in the western  hemisphere.

A few rules to abide by: 
  • 2D and 3D work including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, fiber, graphics, sculpture, ceramics, glass, jewelry, metalworking, and wood. 
  • No installations.
  • Wall mounted work must be framed and ready for secure installation - d-rings attached to the back and stretched with wire; no saw-tooth hangers. 
  • Fiber pieces/quilts and other wall mounted works must have a hanging apparatus able to hang from 1 or 2 nails.
  • Bumpers are required for framed pieces.
  • 40" max. width for 2D work.
  • 70 pounds max. weight
  • White, off-white, grey or black mats only.
  • Works on canvas must be framed or have clean, finished gallery wrapped edges.
  • Works must not have been exhibited in any previous VAST juried exhibition.

Course Description - Art Quilt Collage:
Create surface design on fabric with hand made stamps, found object printing, stencils, wet-on-wet painting, handwriting and other improvisational mark-making then use your original fabrics plus various commercial fabrics to create an original small art quilt incorporating hand stitching. You'll have lots of left over fabrics to incorporate in collage or other mixed media projects.

WORKSHOP DETAILS:
Registration Fee is $50 for sign-up, and is non-refundable. Please make checks payable to VAST and mail to

The balance is due one month prior to workshop. If the participant must cancel, the VAST workshop coordinator will attempt to fill the open spot from the official waiting list. If there is no waiting list, the participant is free to fill the spot on their own. No refunds will be made one month or less prior to the workshop. If there are not enough participants to cover the workshop costs, or if VAST must cancel for any reason, participants will be notified and will promptly receive a full refund including the deposit.

September VAST Figure Drawing Group 
In September, VAST will sponsor a monthly drawing session with a live model. This two hour open studio at the Arts Center will have no instructor. The group is available to VAST members only. 

Each session will start with short poses, and move

to longer poses (15 - 20 minutes). The model will be clothed. Participants will share the cost of the model. All participants will be responsible for putting the room back in order.

Meeting day: the fourth Thursday of the month (exc e pt  November).
There will be no meetings in June, July, and August.

Time: 10 AM to 12 Noon
2016 Dates: 9/22, 10/27, 12/22 
2017 Dates: 1/26, 2/23, 3/23, 4/27, 5/25.

Location: The craft room at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 East Hickory Street.

Because studio space is limited, it will be necessary for interested artists to reserve a space.

Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard + Soft began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough. Now in its 30th year, the exhibition opens to international artists as we celebrate the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. Each year approximately 70 works from the hundreds submitted are selected by an esteemed juror for exhibition at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center.

The photography of Bria Lee, will be on display from July 6 through September 7.  

Blia Lee is an award-winning boutique photographer in the Denton/Decatur area. Lee  specializes in creative senior portraits as well as family and children's portraits and  is known for creating timeless pieces with dramatic and vivid colors.  Lee enjoys designing  unique portraits that capture identities, emotions, memories and imaginations.  She has been featured online and in print publications such as "The Twelfth Year", "Seniorologie", and "Senior Inspire".

Artists will create foam stamps from their drawings.  They will be work with these foam stamps using powder charcoal to create under paintings on canvas or canvas boards.  Then, the artist will use pencils, acrylic paints and/or other mediums to complete their artwork.
Judy will be demonstrating several ideas for your figures/shapes.  Critiques are always helpful and we will have them.  
 
Supply List:  exact  knife,  stamps, s everal canvas boards or canvas- no larger than 20x24, a crylic paints (metallics work great with the charcoal look) and brushes ( 2 or 3 inch brush and small one for details/signature),  scissors,  Krylon workable fixative spray,  Mask and googles for using powdered charcoal,  plastic gloves,  paper towels,  drawing pencils (i.e.: 2b-9b to use for shading),  masking tape,  drawings to use: life, florals, animals, non-objectives, etc.   The following will be provided:  powdered charcoal,  cutting board,  water container,  light boxes.

Art of Peace

The 2016 theme is Paths to Peace: Journey to Wholeness, and the 2016 Peace Honoree is the Samaritan Counseling Center of Tyler, Texas.
Artists must be over 18 years of age and reside in Texas. 
Works in all media are eligible, provided they can be juried by digital image. Each artist may submit 3 pieces of art. (Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Photography/Digital Media, Sculpture, Mixed Media, and Fine Craft, wood, metal, clay, fiber, glass)
Artwork should relate to the 2016 theme, Paths to Peace: Journey to Wholeness, including the concepts of peace of mind, emotional well-being, completeness and process.

Exhibition Dates: August 1-27, 2016, Dallas Public Central Library, 4th Floor
Awards:   Best in Show $300,  Best Literary Theme  $200,  Best Innovation  $100,  Four Honorable Mention at $50 each
Deliver Submitted work on Sunday, July 31, from 2pm-4pm at Dallas Central Library.
The submitted work must be sculptural (three dimensional) and express a literary theme.  Sculptures may be of any media within the dimensions of 18 inches wide, 18 inches high and 18 inches deep.  The weight limit is a maximum of 10 pounds.
There is no entry fee.  
Images are not requested.  
CAC membership is required.  
The artist is limited to one entry.

2016 15th Annual IAA National Animal Art Juried Competition

2016 marks the 15th year  Irving Art Association has held a special competition on animal art. Entry is open to all legal residents of the U.S. in the contiguous 48 states, 18 and older. Any animal species is considered as acceptable subject matter for works, including both wildlife and domestic.

Texas Photographic Society's "FotoTexas: People, Places & Culture"
Deadline: August 15, 2016
Juried by Dan Burkholder, fine art photographer, author and educator based in Palenville, New York. 
Entry fee is $30 for 5 images, plus $6 for each additional image. 
We are pleased to announce a new themed call for entry, FotoTexas: People, Places & Culture, as well as support programming in collaboration with the Richland College Photography Department in Dallas, Texas. FotoTexas seeks work produced in Texas and wishes to celebrate the rich history, culture, people, icons and landscape of the state that TPS proudly calls home. Awards. Photographers may enter up to 10 images. Please don't forget to include your membership fee, if also joining TPS at the time of entry.
FotoTexas: People, Places & Culture is open to artists of all levels internationally. 
All photographic based work is encouraged including digital, silver and alternative processes.

Plano Art Association: 11th Annual 125 Show 2016
August 23 - September 24, 2016
The show is open to all artists living within 125 miles of Plano. The show will be held at the PAA Gallery in downtown Plano.
Judges will select the top 60 works for display in the PAA gallery.  
First ($600), Second ($400), and Third ($200) places will be awarded for each of the three categories: 2D, 3D, and prints and photography.
You may enter up to 3 works at $30 per work.

Max size for 2D work is 48 in. in any direction. 3D works should not exceed 50 lbs. Works must be able to fit through a standard size door.  The Slant artist collective has the right to refuse work that does not match the images that were submitted for jury review.

A YEAR ON THE PLAZA ART COMPETITION 
Deadline to Enter original artwork by Thursday, August 25 at 3:00pm.
Winning work displayed on art wall in Dallas Arts District for one year, no entry fees. 

Presented by The Catholic Foundation, the unique competition is accepting original work, searching for a piece of art to adorn a 28-foot-long by 9-foot-wide public art wall in the Dallas Arts District for one year. Submissions must measure 28 inches by 9 and 2/3 inches, and the winning work will be digitally enlarged to cover the wall. 
The winning artist receives a $2,500 stipend and honorable mentions receive $250 each.
"A Year on the Plaza Art Competition presents a unique opportunity for talented individuals in Texas to express themselves artistically and showcase their work in the Dallas Arts District," said J. Matthew Kramer, president and CEO of The Catholic Foundation.
Submissions must be appropriate for the location of the Plaza on the Cathedral grounds but do not require a religious theme. There are no entry fees. 
Once the winning piece is selected by a panel of highly respected members of the local arts community, it will be unveiled during a public dedication ceremony in October 2016.

Artist Day Out

VAST Artist Day Out is a day where members may come paint at the PA-AC from 9:00am - 3pm, approximately two mornings a month.  There is no instructor, it is not a workshop...just an art gathering. 

 

You may paint, sketch, quilt or what ever creative endeavor you desire in the fellowship with your artist friends.  Lunch and fellowship are the best parts!

The cost is $10 a year, or $1 a session if you just want to drop in every now and then.  Pay with your dues, or you can send $10 to:
