A Message from UMIA|Constellation
|
|
UMIA | Constellation®, a valued long-term member of Wyoming Medical Society, is offering our members an opportunity to gain knowledge on the alarming impact that diagnostic error has on patients, residents, care teams and organizations through two unique opportunities.
The first opportunity, called Working Together to Improve Diagnosis, is a three half-day virtual conference (May 25—27, 2021), hosted by UMIA | Constellation, Iowa Healthcare Collaborative and the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM). The conference will highlight the alarming impact of diagnostic error. It will energize teams to identify opportunities for improving diagnostic processes in their own organization by sharing best practices and successes from industry experts. Additionally, it will highlight the importance of communication when a harm event does occur. The conference agenda is split into three half-days with a keynote and several other speakers each day.
Keynote speakers include:
-
David Newman-Toker, MD Director, Armstrong Institute Center for Diagnostic Excellence, Johns Hopkins Medicine, who will define the landscape of diagnostic errors, an area in medicine that finally begun to change for the better.
-
Suzanne Schrandt, Senior Engagement Advisor, Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine, will describe current practices in patient engagement to improve diagnosis in medicine.
-
Thomas Gallagher, MD, Department of Medicine, Professor, Department of Bioethics and Humanities, University of Washington, will discuss the important role that effective communication, patient engagement and learning can play in preventing diagnostic errors.
The second opportunity is a virtual Collaborative, called Taking Action to Close the Loop on Diagnostic Error, and is a joint effort of Constellation and SIDM focused on improving the diagnostic process during two of the three key stages; tests and results processing and follow-up and coordination. It is a year-long group whose focus will be on reduction in patient harm and the subsequent financial burdens, while supporting the implementation of new strategies and shared experiences.
