WMS Bylaws specify that all meetings of the WMS Board of Trustees (BoT) are open to active members. The WMS BoT will be at the end of the month to discuss legislative policy positions as well as conduct the other business of the Society.

As always, our members' input is welcome and appreciated.

We do our best work when we have perspectives from across the state and from various specialties.

HHS Update
HHS releases new Buprenorphine practice guidelines, expanding prescribing authority without DEA certification.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued updated guidelines that will allow practitioners to administer buprenorphine to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) without U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certification.

This exemption allows practitioners to treat up to 30 patients with OUD using buprenorphine without certain training-related certifications, including the ability to provide counseling and ancillary services. Under this exemption, qualified emergency department practitioners can now administer buprenorphine to begin MAT.

What this means for you

  • Qualified practitioners include physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse-midwifes.
  • This exemption only applies to prescribing Schedule III, IV, and V drugs or a combination of them, including buprenorphine.
  • Eligible practitioners are still required to submit a Notice of Intent application to prescribe buprenorphine.

Providers who do not want to practice under this exemption can request a waiver that will allow them to treat more than 30 patients.

COVID-19 Updates
Texas Medical Association Chart Compares COVID Therapies
To help you compare the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH’s) recommended COVID-19 outpatient therapies, the Texas Medical Association has created a chart with information on each of the four recommended drugs in the NIH’s listed preference order: nirmatrelvir plus ritonavir, sotrovimab, remdesivir, and molnupiravir.

The chart includes dosages, situational considerations (such as whether the patient can continue on the drug if hospitalized during the therapy), contraindications, and more. Also included are links to fact sheets and locators for the treatments.
