Go See Frankfurt bursary for publishers - apply by 7 July

£1000 Bursary to attend Frankfurt Book Fair 2022 for early to mid-stage publishers

We, along with our Scottish Books International project are offering five bursaries of £1000 each to enable new and emerging publishers to attend the Frankfurt Book Fair this year.

The bursary scheme is to help develop the next generation of Scottish publishers grow their international working capacity by attending one of the world’s largest book fairs. Eligibility is extended to applicants who have been working in publishing for no longer than 8 years and we welcome applications from any field – editorial, marketing, rights, sales, etc. However a focus on sales, rights and marketing with an international focus is important.

The scheme is open to all publisher members of Publishing Scotland and non-members.

The Book Fair takes place this year 19–23 October - successful applicants would be required to book their own travel and accommodation on receipt of the funds.

As part of the bursary award, a place will be made for each bursary holder on the Publishing Scotland stand at the Fair with an opportunity to display books, hold meetings, and have company branding. We will support successful attendees with information sessions.

If you would like to discuss this in more detail or to talk about eligibility, please email Marion. Deadline for applications – 7 July 2022. This is tight but the form is not onerous, and we will make decisions very shortly after the closing date so travel, accommodation and meetings can be planned.

To apply, please complete the Application form and read the Terms & Conditions below and email to [email protected] by 5pm on Thursday 7 July 2022.

PLEASE NOTE   – the Bookfair has three busy trade days on 19, 20, 21 October and then two less busy public days on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 October. The bursary requirement would be to attend for the first three days – and the last two are entirely optional. Self-publishers are not eligible.

To book a slot at one of the above networking events email Patrick Jamieson with details of which event you wish to attend ASAP.

Submit titles for the Edinburgh International Book Festival retail space

We have met with the team at EIBF and chatted about the sales opportunities for Scottish publishers post Covid recovery. The space for the bookshop is much smaller than the Charlotte Square village of bookshop tents we are used to. Overall the space given for the festival in general is reduced post Covid and thus the bookshop will remain so, at least until they relocate to the Quartermile next year.

However, they were confident this year that footfall will be increased, 2021 suffered from social distancing and reluctance of the general public to come to in-person events, and improved accessibility of the site this year should encourage more book buyers through the doors.

There will be a few changes to increase the flow of customers in the shop and integrate it better into the site, and there is more signing areas and a big event bookshop in Central Hall too. We plan to put together shelf talkers and help with your marketing and will be in touch about that soon.

Attached here full info and the spreadsheet to complete for submitting up to 10 titles for the shop – no charge again. Please send your spreadsheets back to Lucy by 1 July.

Audio Watch Party 29 June - Can anything be an audiobook?

Join us at the Publishing Scotland offices on Wednesday 29 June (5.30–7pm) for a BookMachine Talking Audio Watch Party.

We will be gathering to connect in person and watch the virtual event on-screen where guests from Little, Brown, Audible UK, Beat Technologies and Pan Macmillan will be discussing 'Can anything be an audiobook?'. They’ll consider how publishers have experimented creatively with traditional book genres in audio, as well as the role of original recordings, a producer’s perspective and how consumers interact with audio. For more information on the event topic and speakers, see the Talking Audio event page. You don't need to buy a ticket to join us.

Vikki and Joan will be hosting in the North Bridge Room at the Publishing Scotland offices in Edinburgh from 5.30 to 7pm for chat, viewing and refreshments. If you are interested in coming, email [email protected].
