Memorial Day is a time to honor military members who have lost their lives defending their country ... and we mostly do it through the ceremonious grilling of meat. If you're American, you understand. Great food and drinks with loved ones — this is the American dream so many have fought for.
Last year we explored food pairings like Garlic Shrimp & Rosé, Spicy Tikka Chicken Skewers & Chenin Blanc, Grilled Pork Chops & Valpolicella, BBQ Chicken & South African Chardonnay, and Steak & Malbec. This year, we explore wine pairings for other cook-out favorites.

Happy Birthday, Bob Dylan!
If you're a fan of Bob Dylan's music, just wait until you enjoy it while sipping on his delicious whiskey! Heaven’s Door is a collection of handcrafted American Whiskeys co-created with Bob Dylan. The perfect blend of art and craft, a collection of stories to be savored and shared. Both the Double Barrel and Decade Series Straight Bourbon Whiskey were awarded Double Gold at the 2023 SF World Spirits Competition.
“I wanted to create a collection of American Whiskeys that, in their own way, tell a story. I’ve been traveling for decades, and I’ve been able to try some of the best whiskey spirits that the world has to offer. This is great whiskey."

Wine Pairings For Memorial Day
|
|
Bright citrusy flavors call for zippy, high acid white wines. If you're adding fresh herbs into your marinade, we suggest the Menade Verdejo. This organic Spanish white wine is grown in limestone rich soils at high altitudes in Rueda. The results are a bright, mineral driven, fruity wine with herbaceous notes of thyme & fennel. Gerard Boulay Sancerre is a classic pairing for lemony shrimp. This Sauvignon Blanc is also herbaceous & citrus driven, but with fun notes of white pepper and a textural body from 8 months of lees aging.

It wouldn't be a cook-out without hot dogs! There are many delicious wines that go fabulously with this unfussy food. Some of our favorite pairings are low tannin, juicy reds and aromatic white wines. Cruess Gewurztraminer is floral with classic lychee fruit flavors, amplified by the 14 days of skin contact. This juicy white wine is perfect with the sweet and sour flavors of ketchup & mustard. Domaine Chignard Julienas has a beautiful Beaujolais bouquet of potpourri, cinnamon, crushed granite & black raspberries. This light hearted, chillable red wine is perfect for a salty hot dog with all the fixings.

Bratwursts with high acid sauerkraut — a perfect pairing. What wines play into this delicious marriage of flavors? We follow the old adage, "if it grows together, it goes together." Bratwursts have been eaten in Germany since the 1300's, so we suggest pairing them with a German or Alsatian wine. A. Christmann Riesling is made from biodynamically grown grapes. It's dry, fuller bodied, and very herbaceous in a perfect-for-pork fashion. Michel Fonne Pinot Noir is light and earthy with hints of leather & smoke. This Alsatian Pinot is complimented by charred sausages.

Juicy hamburgers are best complimented by juicy wines. Something light to medium bodied, lower in tannins, and fruity will best compliment the traditional toppings of lettuce, tomato and onion. Francois Laurent 'Il Fait Soif' Côtes du Rhône is a biodynamic, thirst-quenching, Grenache based blend perfect for a grilled burger. If you're making lighter veggie burgers, the Regis Bouvier Bourgogne is a beautiful fruit-forward red Burgundy to try. Raspberries & red currant will brighten any hefty Impossible Burger concoction.

Barbeque slathered ribs are the showstopper of any cook-out. Bold in flavor, these morsels can hold up to some powerful wines. For beef ribs, we love Tempranillo for its ability to heigh ten the pepper, tobacco & herbal flavors of the meat. Condado de Haza Crianza is a fruity Tempranillo from Ribera Del Duero which compliments sweet BBQ sauce perfectly. Madson Syrah is especially delicious with pork ribs. This natural Syrah has notes of black raspberry, pepper-rubbed bacon, herbs, licorice and black pepper.

Cocktail of the Week: IPA Collins
Beer cocktails are super underrated in my opinion. This is a cocktail that I have been making for a long time and it is a refreshing change up for your summertime drinking. For this drink I like using an IPA for its fruity hoppines. Indeed Flavorwave does the trick. Then upping the fruitiness I throw in Rothman & Winter Peach Liqueur. Then some bourbon and some lemon. and you are ready to go.

|
|
INGREDIENTS
1oz Old Forester 100 Bourbon
.75oz Rothman & Winter Peach Liqueur
.5oz Fresh Lemon Juice
.25oz Simple Syrup
1 dash of Angostura Bitters
3oz Indeed Flavorwave IPA
INSTRUCTIONS
Add all ingredients except beer into a shaker, add ice and give it a quick shake. Strain the mixture over ice into a Collins glass. Top with beer and give it a quick stir to combine. Garnish with an orange twist.
Cheers,
Nikola

The Crus of Beaujolais, with special guest Paul Hennessy!
Thursday, June 8
6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., $60
Beaujolais is one of the most exciting wine regions in France, and there's good reason for it. The wines are delicious, nuanced, terroir expressive, and perhaps more importantly, they usually won't break the bank. To help us navigate the world of Beaujolais, I'll be joined by Sommelier extraordinaire Paul Hennessy, formerly of Bachelor Farmer and currently running the beverage program at Mara in the Four Seasons. This tasting will be a blast as we investigate the region and converse with a pro about this wonderful wine's place at the dinner table.

Staff Picks - What to Drink this Week
Try these special, staff-selected libations!
2021 Bodkin Light Skinned Zinfandel, Mendocino County - $23.99
It's Memorial Day Weekend and we need wines that pair with grilling and chilling; that's where Bodkin Light Skinned Zin comes in. Christopher Christensen is the geeky, bi-racial, Iowa born brains behind his winery Bodkin and the label of Light Skinned is a love letter to the diversity of his family. He recently stopped by the shop to taste his wines with us and I was absolutely smitten with his 36 hour skin contact Zin. Darker than a rose but served with a chill, I can't think of a better wine for this holiday weekend. Fresh strawberries and watermelon in the glass, this is a new favorite summer crusher!

5 Sentidos Cuishe - $114.99
Very generally, I don't believe that price necessarily correlates with quality. However, some products are so expertly and painstakingly crafted that they fully merit every dollar you pay for them. An example of such is 5 Sentidos Cuishe, a delightful mezcal made from Karwinskii agave. While folks normally associate mezcal with "smoky" flavor, this cuishe has rich fruity notes, prominent agave flavor, and just a touch of smoke. Even as a novice mezcal drinker, the quality of this bottle was extremely apparent to me. While every mezcal from 5 Sentidos has impressed me, this one was a pretty easy favorite for reasons that I'm not sure I can put into words. Whether you're a seasoned mezcal drinker, have a special affinity for cuishe, or are just willing to spring for something nice, you won't be disappointed by this bottle.

2020 Sono Montenidoli 'Tradizionale' Vernaccia di San Gimignano - $24.99
From her small hilltop vineyards overlooking the famous Medieval towered Tuscan village of San Gimignano, legendary winemaker Elisabetta Fagiuoli produces her 'Tradizionale' expression of, perhaps, Italy's finest white wine varietal, Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Her vineyards have always been farmed organically and her Tradizionale release sees no oak. It's all about the terroir and fruit. Notes of hay, herbs, and nuts lead to a sleek and tense palate with a long, dry, and slightly bitter almond finish. This will match well with olive oil based Mediterranean seafood dishes prepared with artichokes, asparagus, and spinach.

2022 Domaine de la Madone 'La Vinif a Papa' Beaujolais - $25.99
This wine has just arrived in time for your Memorial Day Barbecue! Domaine Madone is located in Beaujolais in Fleurie. This wine is a throwback to the winemaker's father who used to vinify his wines using carbonic maceration with no added sulfur. The result is a delicious quaffable red that is delicious with a chill. The nose shows rick blackberry and cherry fruit which follows through on the medium bodied palate. It is perfect for brats, hot dogs, and burgers.

2020 Nicosia ‘Lenza di Munti’ Etna Bianco DOC - $27.99
Nicosia is a fifth generation, family owned winery located on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna This is a crisp and punchy little number. Made of native white varietals Carricante and Catarratto the nose is bursting with wild flower and citrus tones an elegant mid palate of of ripe citrus leads to long saline finish accented with grapefruit pith.
