Taste Wine with Giovanni Gaja of Gaja

When: Monday, June 10th (6:30-8:30pm)
Where: NLWS Cellar

We are thrilled to introduce Giovanni Gaja, son of Angelo Gaja. He will be pouring six of his family's incredible wines (see list below). Gaja is one of the most influential producers in Italy and is one of a handful of fine wine producers that can charge the same prices as the top names of Burgundy and Bordeaux. This rare opportunity is not to be missed.

Growing up in Barbaresco, Giovanni loved spending time in the vineyards, and is now shadowing his father at the winery, gleaning wisdom that only Angelo Gaja possesses. Currently, the Gaja Winery owns 250 acres of vineyards in Piedmont, located in the Barbaresco and Barolo districts. As a member of the fifth generation, Giovanni will help guide the family winery—founded a century and a half ago by his great-great-grandfather Giovanni Gaja — into the future. Join us for a seated educational wine tasting in our cellar. Tickets are limited. We hope to see you there!
Note: $20 of the $35 purchase price of your ticket will be refunded with any wine purchased from the event.

Wines being Poured:
Gaja Barbaresco 2015
Gaja Sperss 2013
Gaja Brunello Di Montalcino 2014
Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Sugarille 2011
Gaja Rossj-Bass 2013
Gaja Sori San Lorenzo 2013
Taste the Top Tier Wines from Catena Zapata with Winemaker Ernesto Bajda

When: Saturday, June 15th (1:30-3:30pm)
Where: NLWS Cellar

Please join us in welcoming winemaker Ernest Bajda for an afternoon wine tasting featuring the top tier single vineyard Bodega Catena Zapata wines.

Ernesto (Nesti) Bajda started working in the Catena family’s vineyards in 2002. In 2005 he joined the research team to work on microvinifications to determine the best places in the family’s high altitude vineyards. Now with more than a dozen vintages behind him, Nesti not only has expertise in research and vineyard management, but he also has a unique knowledge of the precision tools to identify variability in vineyards, which is what he believes are the key to achieving outstanding wines. This is a seated educational wine tasting in our cellar. Tickets are limited. We hope to see you there!
Note: $20 of the $35 purchase price of your ticket will be refunded with any wine purchased from the event.

M A D E I N A M E R I C A :
STAFF PICKS FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Patti's:
2017 Morgan, Sauvignon Blanc, Monterey, $21.99

A classic expression of Sauvignon Blanc. Snappy acidity with an edge of lemon, key lime, and granny smith apple. A small touch of new oak creates an elegant texture on the palate of this clean and crisp patio perfect wine. Pair it with light summer fare and friends.
Patrick's :
2018 A Tribute to Grace, Grace Wine Company, $27.99

To mark the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, my choice for a wine recommendation honors the grandmother of wine maker, Angela Osborne. She even named her Santa Barbara winery after her grandmother, Grace, and her grandmother's best feature, living a life of grace. Angela's love for the Grenache grape took her to sunny California, from her native New Zealand, in a quest to find the perfect vineyard location for her expression of the varietal. With the remote Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard, she found her place. This high desert environment is a perfect balance of heat, light, and cool evenings, giving the 2018 vintage a rich body, aromas of preserved lemon, and a fruity crisp palate, just in the time for summer!
Enjoy Angela's Tribute to her grandmother, Grace, with a blueberry and goat cheese salad as you open the patio for the season!
Madison's :
2016 Roserock, Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills, $44.99
94pts James Suckling

From Domane Drouhin's outpost in the Willamette Valley: an impressively pure and refined Chardonnay from the volcanic soils of southern Eola-Amity Hills. Veronique Drouhin's Burgundian touch is apparent. The wine is bright and expressive, with a core of lemon zest, orchard fruits, a light touch of nectarine, and a prominent amount of minerality.
Quin's :
2016 Turley Estate Zinfandel, Napa Valley, $52.99
92pts Wine Spectator

From one of the most respected names in California zinfandel, the Estate Vineyard surrounds the winemaking facility and is among their best fruit. Certfied Organic, this dry-farmed zinfandel is powerful yet refined with ripe berries, tobacco and dried flowers on the nose. The palate shows more intense berry and cherry liqueur flavors, with pepper, smoke, and herbal notes. This vintage is drinking beautifully right now but an extra bottle or two could be set aside and easily show well for the next few years!
Dave's :
2015 Airfield, Syrah, Yakima Valley, $18.99

The propriety that makes up Airfield Vineyards has been in the Miller family since the beginning of the 20th century. In the 1940's, a portion of the property was converted into an Airforce flight training base, hence the name. Grapes were first planted in the late 60's and by the mid 70's the farm was providing fruit to the large wineries in Columbia Valley. By the early 00's the family began producing and bottling their own wine from some of the choice plots. This Syrah is a prime example. It's a rich and smooth style with plenty of weight and concentration. Airfield strives to be sustainable and provide high value in their wines.
