*** Civics in Action! ***

Seventh grade Civics students got the opportunity to see voting practices in real time. Students each received an actual ballot and were able to stand in a booth and vote on local amendments. Students finally inserted their ballots into the same machines that are used during elections. This was a great experience for our students to experience their civic duty in action!

Dear Mark,

The fall months are upon us and before we know it, winter and WINTER BREAK will be here. Coming soon in Skyward you will have access to your child’s report card for the first nine weeks. Please take time to review your child’s progress and discuss with them positive changes they can make to improve their grades.

The semester will be up in December and students who receive an “F” in core classes such as: Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science may be retained in their current grade. For our 8th graders, this means students may not be promoted to high school.

Have these conversations now with your students and please reach out to the school for assistance.

At the end of the 2024-2025 first quarter, we recognized our students who are improving and making academic gains. For the quarter we celebrated student success with our Homecoming event. Each day, we celebrated with a different dress-up theme. Then on Thursday, we held a school-wide pep rally and on Friday we had our dance. Students selected “90s Hip Hop” as the theme for our Flashback Friday Dance.

Fun events like theses are what makes Memorial Middle School special and makes our school feel like a family.

Please take time to read our latest edition of The Soldier Sentinel and we thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Eddie Foster

Due to missing recent school days because of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, students will need to make up a school day. That day will be this coming Friday, October 25th.

In the Classroom

Learning in Visual Arts

Our students who have Art as an elective this year have been working on some pretty amazing projects for Hispanic Heritage Month which ended this past week. Check out their artwork below and the descriptions of the techniques used.

Marie E (6th grade):

“The inspiration behind my art is the sun and the moon. When we looked at art in class inspired by the sun and moon, I realized I wanted my art to look different. I wanted my art to use a lot of line and create different patterns on it.”

Shaelle C (7th grade):

“My inspiration for the sun was the color of flame and fire. I added the gems because the sun always shines in the sky. My inspiration for the moon was the night sky and the stars. The gems represent the stars that are always sparkling in the sky at night. I put that tone of blue because it is my favorite color.”

Allen F (6th Grade):

“My goal was to make my art work brighter than the others! I worked hard to make sure my colors blended in with each other and make the edges of my moon smooth. It was successful!”

Myrthsee F (7th grade):

“My inspiration was my imagination. The moon's eyes are blue because of the stars in the galaxy. Her hair is the galaxy and shows Saturn, my favorite planet, the earth, and the sun. The electric posts are from Mexico and represent where I am from.”

Mikaela Arvantis (7th grade):

“My inspiration was my sister since their name is Luna and they love astronomy especially the eclipse. While creating my project, I thought of my sister, and all the facts they have told me about astrology.”

OCPS stiffens punishments for threats.

The school district’s change to its discipline policy was announced the same day a phone threat disrupted one of its schools.

Observer story by Michael Eng (October 17, 2024)

Effective immediately, any Orange County Public Schools student with a weapon making a threat against a school will face full exclusion and expulsion from the district.

“The changes are in response to the increase in school disruptions caused by social-media posts and rumors about school threats over the last several weeks,” Superintendent Dr. Maria Vazquez said in an evening phone call to parents Thursday, Oct. 17. “The changes will ensure that the individuals involved in making threats, or participating and spreading the threats, face the appropriate discipline.”

Vazquez's announcement came just hours after threats disrupted both Edgewater and Timber Creek high schools. Orlando Police Department officers on Oct. 17 investigated a phone threat made to Edgewater and concluded it was not credible. On the same day at Timber Creek, students were evacuated after the school received a bomb threat. That threat is under investigation.

This week, the state also announced more severe consequences for making a spread or false report through the Fortify Florida app, Vazquez said.

“Making a threat is not a joke, nor should it be used as prank,” she said. “This week, our middle- and high-school students have been required to take a Canvas course explaining the consequences of making any type of threat against our schools. Our elementary students are having age-appropriate review of changes during the quarterly review, as well.”

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month

* In cryptography, a brute-force attack consists of an attacker submitting many passwords or passphrases with the hope of eventually guessing correctly. The attacker systematically checks all possible passwords and passphrases until the correct one is found.

Three basic rules for computer passwords:

RULE 1: Password should be at least eight (8) characters long.

RULE 2: Must include at least three (3) of the following:
