Age Well Arrowhead opens
the area's first Memory Cafe

By: Kim Hileman, Program Director

What is a Memory Café?
Memory Cafes were first started in the Netherlands in 1997 and quickly took hold in Europe and now the U.S. (numbering over 200 and growing) as a place where those suffering from memory loss, as well as their care providers and family members, can find relaxation, fun, and the support of other people who are having similar experiences.
All too often a common question of someone diagnosed with memory loss is “Where have all my friends gone?”.
A Memory Café is designed to reduce social isolation and provide positive social interactions free from judgement, allowing a sense of normalcy and the opportunity to inspire new friendships and peer support. Memory Cafés often will serve a light refreshment and offer social/conversation time along with activities that may include reminiscence, musicians, the arts, meaningful projects and dignified playfulness.
With generous support from The Victory Fund, Age Well Arrowhead is proud to offer the first Memory Café in the Duluth, Hermantown and Proctor area.
Our inaugural event will take place on
March 13, 2018 from 1:30-3:00 pm
at Hope United Methodist Church, 301 W St. Marie Street, Duluth, MN 55803. Subsequent Memory Cafés will be held the 2

Tuesday of each month at the same location.

A free screening to be shown at Zeitgeist Arts

At The Lillian Booth Actors Home just outside NYC, a group of long-retired Broadway entertainers dive into a production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and find that nothing is what it seems to be. With a play that is usually about young love and sex farce, this ensemble finds that for them, the themes of perception, reality and dreaming deeply resonate at this stage of life. As they deal with the shifting mental and physical challenges of old age, they realize that creativity is a magical force of renewal. Starring Broadway luminaries from another era, STILL DREAMING thrills with the force of its relevance for those of any age.

Marshall Students Volunteer After Snow Leaves Many Stuck at Home
|
DULUTH, Minn. – Reese Orn and Maddie Maas are 8th-grade students at Duluth’s Marshall School, and they have a passion for helping others.
“It makes me feel good that we’re helping people out and giving them more chances to get out of their houses,” Orn said.
The girls are working on a school project – one that puts them right in the heart of the community, serving as volunteers. However, these young women are not just doing it for the grades.
“We’re trying to get people to volunteer because they want to volunteer,” Maas said. “Not because they’re forced for school. ”

March is Frozen Foods Month
|
5 Reasons You Should Be Eating Frozen Foods
1. Frozen Foods Are Full of Nutrition
During the winter months, a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables is not as readily available and the fruits and veggies are not as nutrient-dense as they are in the warmer months of the year. Frozen produce, though, is picked at its peak ripeness, it is blanched and then flash-frozen to lock the food into its best-tasting and high nutrient state. In terms of calories, frozen fruits and vegetables are just as healthy as fresh and even better…have no added sodium.
2. Frozen Foods Help You Save Money
When buying frozen foods, you can use exactly what you need and keep the rest frozen which can translate into less waste and spoilage.
3. Frozen Foods Are Easy to Prepare
If you routinely find yourself in a time crunch, here's good news: many frozen foods can be prepared in less than 15 minutes. Fruits and vegetables are peeled and cut, so you spend less time prepping for your meal. Frozen meats are usually individually packaged and trimmed for quick preparation. Most cooking methods are simple and fast as well.
4. Frozen Foods Provide Healthy and Sensible Options
Sometimes it’s difficult to follow proper portion sizes. Frozen foods can help us achieve healthy eating goals because you can take out and use the exact portion needed. Frozen fruits and vegetables do not have anything added to them when they are frozen, so it is just like eating fresh. Think of stir-fry vegetable options to mix with a favorite lean protein for a fast and satisfying meal – and frozen fruit for your daily morning smoothie.
5. Frozen Foods Can Be Exciting
Be creative with your meal planning! Try something new and add additional vegetables to your favorite pasta dish, try a new fruit to top your oatmeal, or start incorporating vegetables into breakfast. Be creative! Frozen does not have to be uninspired!

Dementia Friendly Living Training
|
|
 |
The Dementia Friendly Living Training was hosted at the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota Retail Space on 2/22/18 and occurs quarterly. The training was a success in helping community members gain confidence when recognizing the warning signs of dementia. The training also included adjustments that can be made to support those with dementia in the community when shopping at local businesses and strategies on communication. The training concluded with information and resources for both those with dementia and caregivers seeking support.

Age Well Arrowhead connects older adults and caregivers to services that support healthy aging and independence.
We are passionate about serving the older adults and caregivers of our community. For this reason, Age Well Arrowhead was founded in 2014 as a local non-profit. We are funded by a Live Well at Home grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Title III funding administered by the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging, a grant from the Minnesota Board on Aging, client contributions, and service fees. These grants allow us to provide services that are easily accessible and affordable.
