Team Spotlight: Katie Zeitler, Dementia Friends Program Manager, MBWC


Katie is excited to be joining the MBWC as the Program Manager for Dementia Friends Washington, based at the Memory Hub community center. As the Program Manager, she will manage and continue to support the expansion of the Dementia Friends program throughout Washington state, working with leads in each county and tribe to bring on new Dementia Friends and Dementia Friends Champions. Anyone can become a Dementia Friend!

  • Bringing SHARP to Seattle - SHARP is a culturally celebratory neighborhood walking and reminiscing program for older Black adults, launched in Portland. A successful pilot of SHARP in Seattle took place in 2022.

Tech Help for Tranquility

In this presentation, explore the use of smart home devices, like Alexa's routines, to create calming and memory-enhancing atmospheres. A free event. Presenter Jesse Fish is a local technology coach with a knack for working with older adults.

If you’d like to schedule a free 50-minute appointment, reach out to us here. Appointments will be available monthly on Wednesdays starting February 28. We’ll give you a call to schedule a time that works for you!

Dementia Legal Planning Clinic

Are you or someone you know experiencing or expecting to experience dementia and have concerns about legal planning? If so, consider signing up for a free 1-hour appointment with the Pro Bono Council. Appointments will cover important documents for those experiencing, or expecting to experience dementia, should complete.

For over twenty-five years, Elderwise has provided a structured program of arts, exercise, discussion and shared community for people with dementia, while providing respite for caregivers, utilizing our philosophy of Spirit-Centered Care, and seeing the wholeness in all people.


Background:

In 2022, Elderwise unveiled our online caregiving course, Elderwise Spirit-Centered Care®: An Overview for Caregivers using Thinkific as our learning platform. We are looking for part-time support for this program.

This here:now arts-engagement class is designed for adults living with dementia and their care partners. Meeting on consecutive Wednesday afternoons at the Frye, come enjoy conversation, works of art, and hands-on exploration with different art mediums led by a specially trained teaching artist. Statewide Impact at the Memory Hub

Hosted at the Memory Hub, MBWC's Project ECHO Dementia is a learning model in which front-line care providers from around WA State meet in a web-based virtual conference room with an interdisciplinary panel of experts in memory loss and dementia.

Learn about the work behind the WA State Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias, and the key resources and MBWC programs (Dementia Friends and Project ECHO) that have come from the tireless implementation of its goals.

Maude's Garden

Announcing:


After the amazing success of last year's event, the Garden of Inspiration Art Show returns in late Summer 2024!

The Garden of Inspiration Art Show is a one-day, open-air exhibit of art created by Memory Hub program participants living with memory loss or dementia and Memory Hub staff, volunteers, and visitors. The event is a collaboration of the UW MBWC and Elderwise.


As a member of the Memory Hub community, you are invited to create and submit artwork inspired by Maude's Garden at the Memory Hub, for example, by the feelings or memories evoked by a visit there. Or, the art can be inspired by your own experiences with gardens or gardening. No prior art experience required. Please direct any questions to Maude's Garden project lead, Genevieve Wanucha, at [email protected]. For background, read this one-pager about the 2023 exhibit this past September.


The date and details about art making opportunities are forthcoming.

Community Resources

Join AARP at Town Hall Seattle for a free Caring for the Caregiver event from 7:30 – 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19. This free event features NBC News/MSNBC Anchor Richard Lui and Dr. Kate Zhong, geriatric psychiatrist, and explores Richard’s own caregiving experience and tips for other caregivers. National Alzheimer's Buddies are excited to introduce their 4th Annual Virtual Symposium: Breaking Through - Advancing Dementia Care taking place tomorrow February 3rd from 10am -12:30pm PT (Held 1-3:30pm EST). HOPE Dementia Support in Vancouver, WA offers a monthly “Music and Memories” program for people with memory loss and their care partners, facilitated by board certified music therapists. More info on their programs page.

NEW Memory Café at Southeast Seattle Senior Center, 2-3:30 p.m. February 22 and continuing every 4th Thursday of the month. Enjoy light refreshments, live music and connections with other people who live with memory loss and care partners. RSVP to 206-722-0317.


Bellingham’s Upfront Theater continues its Minds Alive! Program, an improv class for people with early stage memory loss and their care partners. Enjoy improv exercises designed to tap into the present moment through creativity, connection and joy. Offered every 3rd Monday of the month at 2 p.m. with support from Northwest Regional Council. Spokane County Library District continues its Memory Café every Tuesday from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the North Spokane Library. Come together for socializing, music, crafts and more. Call 509-893-8200 for more information, or learn more here.
