Memory Hub Music Project Featured in Local Media

In February, The Seattle Times visited the Memory Hub to watch the Baloudet Quartet perform for the Elderwise Adult Day program. Participants painted in watercolor as they listened to the music.

This event was part of a research project by Sarah McKiddy, a PhD candidate in the UW School of Nursing, on the connection between music, brain health, and dementia. For her dissertation, McKiddy is observing how live music affects older adults living with memory loss. Her goal is to learn how performing arts groups can work with dementia-specific community centers to create memory-loss programs to improve patients’ sense of self and well-being.

The article describes the potential of such music experiences to create joy, tap into preserved memories, and stimulate creativity.

Celebrating the Lunar New Year Festival

On February 28, some Memory Hub staff joined our on-site collaborator Kin On Health Care Center for their Lunar New Year Festival 萬馬奔騰喜迎春 to welcome in the Year of the Fire Horse! The event was organized by our KinOn partners for a large group of seniors dedicated to living a full and healthy life.

"This celebration was a blast and full of joy, smiles, good luck wishes, talent, style, fun, games and more! There were dance troupes, singing troupes, cardio drumming, riddle lanterns, and even dumplings made by the participants from the Chinese Healthy Aging program at the Memory Hub". - Deb Cayz, Memory Hub Program Operations Assistant for the UW Memory and Brain Wellness Center.

The Gardens and Galleries Program Takes Launch!

On February 20, participants gathered - first at the Frye Art Museum to enjoy works from the new Wallflowers exhibit. They walked over to the Memory Hub for an experience where herbal tea became a social and sensory experience of the painting The Samovar by Nicholas Fechin. The next Galleries and Gardens program is set for May 15; and the Frye Art Museum and the Memory Hub have committed to a quarterly schedule for this inventive melding of both organizations' offerings.
