Spotlight on Memory Hub Front Desk Volunteers:
Lynn Black and Barbara Cobb
| |
BARBARA COBB
Barbara found the Memory Hub when she brought a friend to a Memory Navigator appointment, offered by the Alzheimer’s Association. “Walking in was so comforting,” she said. Barbara has experience in mental health care for children and families; now, volunteering at the Memory Hub has interested her in the world of dementia and caregiving. She is especially enjoying her Monday shifts when the Chinese Healthy Aging program with Kin On meets for tai chi and karaoke. “It’s been eye opening to be exposed to a different language and culture on a weekly basis. The participants are teaching me Chinese words. It is wonderful,” she says.

LYNN BLACK
Volunteering at the Memory Hub brings Lynn a sense of purpose and connection to a supportive community. “Having lost my husband to dementia, I understand firsthand the challenges and heartbreak this disease brings,” says Lynn. “It warms my heart to be able to offer support and a helping hand to others navigating similar journeys, both those living with dementia and their devoted caregivers.” She gets to share her ukulele playing, which brings smiles and a bit of music to everyone.

Thank you to the team of the Cathedral Garden at St. James for hosting a gardening day for our community. Our small group from the Memory Hub got a tour of the spacious garden, which is in its 7th planting season and grows food for neighbors in need. We then got to work thinning turnip seedlings and pulling weeds from beds. We look forward to seeing how the garden looks at our next visit on May 27, 2:30 - 4pm:
Join the Memory Hub and O’Dea High School students for an afternoon of volunteer service in the Cathedral Garden at St. James, which provides food for neighbors in need.

| | | In April, visitors found a wreath of fresh rosemary in the Memory Hub atrium and an invitation to choose a dried botanical to add to the wreath. The beautiful result is a community creation. “I was having a really busy day, but suddenly the scent of rosemary wafting though the room made me pause,” said Janet Salsbury of Elderwise. “The act of adding botanicals brought me into the moment. I felt a sense of calm and mindfulness.” Genevieve Wanucha, Maude’s Garden lead at the Memory Hub, who made the wreath’s rosemary base, hopes that this herbal community creation is the first of many more at the Memory Hub! | | Statewide Impact & Professional Development | | New Request for Applications: Cognition in Primary Care & Project ECHO Dementia Grants to Health Centers | | Cognition in Primary Care and Project ECHO Dementia at UW Medicine have partnered with the shared goals of improving primary care in Washington State for people living with dementia and mild cognitive impairment by offering grants to Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), Rural Health Centers (RHCs), and other similar clinic systems for their involvement in one or both programs.
