South Korean Students Visit to the Memory Hub for Firsthand Experience of Dementia-Friendly Programs
The Memory Hub on-site collaborator, Elderwise, recently hosted four Handong Global University undergraduate psychology students, Jisoo Kim, Minju Gu, Jiyeong Baek and Juhui Kim, who came to Seattle to learn about innovative programs serving older adults and people living with memory loss. The students are part of the Humanities and Social Convergence Talent Training Project, funded by the Korean Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea, whose goal it is to foster international learning opportunities on topics related to current societal issues in Korea, such as the needs of an aging population.
"We believe that the insights gained during our visit will have a lasting impact on how we approach senior care in Korea."

The Story Behind our 'Celebrate Summer' Music Series
Our summer concert series in the garden was the result of a collaboration between the Memory Hub and The Seattle Public Library to create programming directly based on feedback from people with memory loss and their caregivers about what brings them joy. Back in January, participants in a Memory Hub listening session noted the importance of community and connection; movement and being outside; and music. The Library's new article takes us into one of these events.
On a Monday afternoon in mid-August, a spacious courtyard on Seattle’s First Hill is alive with flowers, music, dancing and quiet conversation. It is cloudy, but the mood is all sunshine ...

Recap: The 2024 Frame of Mind Exhibit Opening
At the Fall Arts Showcase
| |
|
At the Fall Arts Showcase on September 25, the Memory Hub atrium buzzed with the voices of community members who had come to view the newest installation of the Frame of Mind Exhibit. This annual rotating exhibit celebrates the many gifts, strengths and unique perspectives people with memory loss offer our community. The showcase featured the chance to hear from many of the featured artists, as well as attend a Meet and Greet with the Memory Hub's first Artist in Residence, dancer and doctor Dr. Julia Becke.
It's an honor to show my work," said Kimberley Rettig, one of the featured artists. “Creativity is a path taken by so many with memory loss [and other brain diseases]. Expression through art opens healing paths for those who create it, and for those who receive it. Art tells life stories and life interpretations, and art has been that for me."

In today's October Garden Discovery Program (the first Fall session), the group explored the fall garden full of flowers and seed heads, savored herbal tea, and shared thoughts about what they noticed and felt grateful for.
In the nature-inspired project, Dawn Robinson invited participants to make botanical floral arrangements using pumpkin vases. People worked together on something they had never done before. The group expressed surprise at how quickly such a beautiful creation came together, the joy of helping one another, and the bounty of the materials provided.
Dawn is in training to become a registered horticultural therapist and is the new leader of the nature-based projects! Her time working with the Memory Hub garden community is helping her to reach her goal.
