A Cold Case is an unsolved felony crime awaiting the discovery of new evidence. It is a case that was suspended after the initial investigation for lack of leads but remains an open file. It is a case that sometimes may require a new set of investigative eyes, and the aid of the public.
Marie Barton murder case
needs the public’s help
At 2:40 on a Sunday, October 7, 2018 Memphis Police responded to a shooting in the parking lot of the Woodlake Apartment complex at 3304 W. Woodlake Circle at the intersection of Tchulahoma and Winchester, near Memphis International Airport.

Several residents heard the sounds of what apparently was a robbery or attempted car-jacking. One couple said, "they woke up to a boom-like sound but weren’t sure what it was."

"We had heard a really loud bang and it kind of sounded like how a generator sounds when they explode," one person said. "And after we heard the sound, we heard somebody screaming, then we didn’t hear anything. It was just silence outside."

When police officers arrived they found a black sedan in the lot and the shooting victim, Marie Barton, 33. She had been fatally shot and died at the scene soon after. Her purse and other belongings were scattered throughout the vicinity.

Now, more than two years later, the MPD Cold Case Team is asking the public for any information that could help solve this murder. Even a small detail could prove pivotal.

Barton’s mother, Jacqueline Barton, has repeatedly appealed for someone to come forward, even the murderer out of remorse. "I just hope she didn't suffer," Barton, who now is raising her daughter’s son, said.
