Memphis Police officers responded to reports of a shooting at the office of the Always On heating and air conditioning company at 2129 Person Avenue just off Lamar Avenue in the Orange mound neighborhood. It was noon on Saturday, November 18, 2017.
On arrival, officers found Steven A. Guidry, 67, one of the owners, on the floor. He died within minutes from multiple gunshot wounds in an apparent robbery.
A tan or gold-colored SUV had been seen on the property just before the shooting. A blue four-door Chevrolet Impala or Malibu also had been seen.
Guidry’s son, Cory Guidry, later explained that three men came into the business just before the shooting to ask for help with a heating problem.
“People would come in and ask for heating and AC calls and I would run over to their house and fix it,” he told reporters at the time. He agreed to help and followed the blue car in his own truck. But soon, Guidry said, the blue sedan started speeding, driving erratically and ran at least one red light, pulling away.
Investigators later said it was possible the request for help was a set-up to get the younger man away from the business.
“It just kills me,” the son said. “I walk in here every day and in my mental image I see my Dad laying on the floor dead.”
This cold case — and MPD Crime of the Week this past June — became a homicide with too few clues soon after the murder. Detectives are asking the public’s help in identifying the blue or tan vehicle, or by providing any other details, no matter how small, in the case.
