An unsolved Midtown murder that happened nearly 13 years ago is one of the still-active cases being worked by the homicide squad’s Cold Case Unit at the Memphis Police Department.
Shots fired in a an apartment building at 109 North Belevedere brought Memphis Police officers to the scene. It was 10 p.m. Saturday, August 29, 2009.
Police arrived in several cruisers and found Fate Coaty, 36, who was badly wounded but still alive. He was transported to The MED (now Regional One Hospital). He died soon after he reached the trauma unit of the hospital.
This violent incident had witnesses. They described two suspects who drove away in a red or burgandy four-door Ford Taurus, a vehicle that had been loaned the victim by a friend. The men fled after grabbing a DVD or VCR player from the apartment.
The first suspect was a black male, five foot nine inches tall and weighing then 175 to 180 pounds. He was medium build and had a dark complexion. The second suspect was described as black male, six feet tall with dark complexion.
