After a struggle on his second floor balcony, Justin Dante Love was shot on the night of Sunday, July 7, 2019.
Unlike many cold cases on file with Memphis Police, in this incident there were witnesses and they gave a detailed description of the suspect: a man wearing a white t-shirt over black gym shorts and armed with a silver semi-automatic handgun.
None knew his identity, though.
Now the Memphis Police Department’s Cold Case Unit is seeking more information from the public to help solve Love’s murder
What is known is that Love, 22 years old, began arguing with the suspect that night just outside his apartment at 2826 S. Mendenhall Road in southeast Memphis. At one point he tried to pull away from the man when he was shot and fell over the railing to the ground below.
Love was declared dead at the scene.
Four years later, investigators hope someone with knowledge of this crime will contact CrimeStoppers and provide information anonymously. The number to call is 528-CASH (2274).

Orange Mound slaying stayed silent
A year before Love’s death, 20-year-old Anthony Dewayne Smith was visiting friends at 836 Boston Street in Orange Mound neighborhood when he was shot and killed.
Now his slaying, too, is a cold case.
It was about 7:20 that Sunday evening when a blue Ford Fusion stopped in front of the house. The vehicle’s driver wave at Anthony to come to the car. He reached the car on the driver’s side and was told to walk to the passenger side. When he walked around to the front passenger door, a subject sitting in the front seat shot him.
He died where he fell.
Several witnesses are believed to have seen clearly what happened.
The Cold Case Unit in this homicide hopes one of them — or someone else with knowledge of this murder — will contact CrimeStoppers and perhaps receive an award for doing the right thing.
