The City of Collierville has just one Cold Case murder in its files – the only unsolved homicide in police records – the killing of George T. Walker at the family’s store on a Sunday evening in December, 2001.
Even though it was 22 years ago, the case still is being worked by detectives, according to Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane. “We are never going to give up on this case,” said Lane.
Walker was a former Collierville policeman and U.S. army sergeant who served during the war in Vietnam. He was the town’s first black police officer when he put on the uniform in 1965. He would become one of the city’s best-known citizens. The night he was shot, he was standing in at the small grocery store on West Street near U.S. Highway 72 so that his wife could attend church services.
The murder happened during an apparent robbery attempt. Walker died the next day, unable to tell officers details of the shooting or whether he knew the shooter.
The family believes he did know the person and that there are people who still know the shooter’s identity today. Detectives say that is possibly true. A $20,000 award was posted by the city years ago in the case and remains available today if someone provides information leading to a charge or arrest.
Man killed in interstate shooting
is now a cold case murder victim
An interstate highway murder, among numerous such incidents during the 2022 calendar year in Memphis, is now a cold case.
Regan Martin, 26, was a passenger in a Ford pickup truck on I-240 at the Perkins Road exit ramp just after midnight August 21, 2022 when someone in a black sedan pumped dozens of bullets into the truck. Martin was killed and two of three others in the truck were injured.
The four had been to a rap concert just before the incident.
Martin’s family believes the killer may have known the people in the truck. The investigation continues by the Memphis Police Department. Anyone with information should call CrimeStoppers at 528-CASH (2274).
