Today, we announced a new partnership with Shelby County Government that will make your Greater Memphis Chamber the workforce development lead for our region.
The Chamber’s Board of Directors voted unanimously Thursday, Nov. 16, to take on the role of interim fiscal agent and administrator for the Greater Memphis Workforce Development Board for a six-month period. The local Workforce Development Board — and, now, the Chamber as its agent — oversees federally funded workforce development programs in four West Tennessee counties: Shelby, Fayette, Lauderdale, and Tipton.
This move is a major milestone for our region and for the Chamber, greatly expanding our role in providing life-changing opportunities to unemployed/underemployed workers. Here's how President & CEO Ted Townsend described the opportunity in our release:
“More now than ever before, the Chamber is guided by the principle that the only sustainable growth is inclusive growth. This collaboration with Shelby County Government lets us scale the work we’re already doing to equip people with the skills and training they need to prosper. In the months ahead, we look forward to continuing to serve our community, which was recently named one of the nation’s fastest-growing job markets.”
